Very sad. I still remember her in “Gloria” and “Night on Earth” (which I think I am the only person to have ever seen it…obviously not true yet I have never met someone who has a clue of what I am talking about when I mention that movie).
A great talent. I find many of John Cassavetes’ films…a little unsettling. In a good way, but also in a ‘I don’t want to watch that again for a good long while’ sort of way. A Woman Under the Influence certainly qualifies in that category. But Rowlands was always fantastic.
We just saw an episode of Dr. Kildare a bit ago where she was the lead guest star. (A pop novelist who, of course, had a medical issue.) I think the last movie I saw her in was The Notebook and then perhaps a later episode of Monk.
I recognize the name but don’t know if I’ve ever seen her in anything and not sure I’d recognize her if I did. I guess I need to go find some of her movies to watch this weekend. (Didn’t Raj on Big Bang Theory once refer to her as a “national treasure”?)
I looked her up because I didn’t recognize her name, saw her picture, and said, “Oh, HER.” I think I mostly remember her for her later guest spots on TV shows I’ve watched (like Numb3rs and Monk).
I’m also aware of the film Gloria, but never saw it.
Her mother lived across the street from my parents in L.A. The night of the '94 earthquake she came over and brought snacks for all the neighbors (IIRC they were brownies).
In 2011 she was in an indy movie called “Olive,” which is supposed to be the first full-length film shot on a smart phone. Some of it was shot in my home town of El Cerrito, CA. I didn’t meet her, or even see any of the filming.
She voiced the role of Grandmother in the English language version of the animated movie Persepolis. It’s an excellent film, though I prefer to see it subtitled.
