RIP Geoffery Lewis

Father of Juliette and frequent costar of Clint Eastwood has died.

Ah shit

I did not know he was Juliette Lewis’s father. He was one of those, oh yeah-- him! actors.

His X-files episode is awesome. One of my favorites.

Oh shit, how depressing. I loved this guy. He was fantastic in the Eastwood westerns but also in The Culpepper Cattle Company, Thunderbolt & Lightfoot, The Way of the Gun (with Juliette), etc. Serious bummer, I’ll really miss him as an actor.

Heck, even had him on my cell, here with Bo Hopkins, Wayne Sutherlin and Luke Askew. Damn.

When I was younger and stupider, I used to bitch how guys like Clint Eastwood used to keep re-using the same actors, never giving newer actors a break. G. Lewis was one. Man, was I an idiot. Lewis was excellent. Thanks, Eastwood. And thank you, Geoffrey for some boffo roles.

We first noticed G. Lewis in Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. He was wonderful, stole many scenes. Enjoyed him forever after.
TB&LF was also the picture that made us realize how good Jeff Bridges was although we’d already seen him in Last Picture Show and Bad Company.

I never ever realized he was Juliette L.'s father.

He was great in High Plains Drifter.

I liked his character, Samuel Gummerre, from The Wind and the Lion.

Ditto on all counts.

I liked his performances. I pretty much knew his name, but didn’t know he was Juliette Lewis’s father. I guess he wasn’t an A list actor where that relationship would be played up.

Sleep well Geoffrey, thanks for the entertainment.

I think I have mentioned this on The Dope before, but I was truly impressed by one of his shortest and least known performances.

In one of the later reincarnations of The Smothers Brothers Show, they continued their tradition of occasionally having a guest perform a “spoken word” performance,

I don’t recall the gist of the performance, but Mr. Lewis came out with only a bare introduction to a plain stage – no props, no notable scenery (it might have been just a black background), and no music. He walked out and started doing a scene by himself with only a spotlight.

In no time at all, you forgot who he was, that he had just walked out there, that anything was happening except the scene playing out before you. I was so caught up in it that it later seemed unreal. The performance was strong, emotional, and quite moving.

It may have lasted only a few minutes, but he owned the attention of everyone in that audience during that time. There was only him and his compelling story.

For the sheer transformation of the stage and atmosphere, the quickness of the change over, and the emotional pull that he invoked, I think it was one of the best acting performances I have ever seen. He might not have been a household name or a leading man, but he was a hell of an actor.

I knew that he was Juliette Lewis’ father, but only because I had seen it mentioned in article about her once, then had to go look him up, then the “oh THAT guy” lightbulb. I’m not sure if I ever saw him in a movie that didn’t have Clint Eastwood in it.

stanger, I see what you mean. I just accessedthis on YouTube; my word! I kept trying to see the dirt-bag cowboy character and he wouldn’t let me–what a performance!

He released albums titled Celestial Navigations of these type of pieces. Worth checking out.

Well, shit

Ah, I liked him in every thing I ever saw him in.

RIP.

Scientologist. And he got his daughter hooked up with them, too.
