RIP, H.R. Giger

Dead at 74.

In space, no one will realize it’s a giant penis.

Was he attended, at the end, by an alienist?

Truly, a disturbing visionary.

I like his work.

His work always struck me as very fetishy.

Dang. Well, I’m glad he was here while he was. His vision turned out some great images, and at least one great movie monster.

Exactly the word for him. I’ve always liked his work, have a copy of his book Necronomicon I. But 15-20 minutes at a time is enough for me- I start feeling like I’d better get out while I’m sure I still can.

Bummer. Had a 12-month calendar once featuring his artwork, fascinating (if unsettling) material.

He did some interesting work, but I’ve always gotten the impression that he was a deeply disturbed person.

In addition to Alien, I also always associate him with the poster in the Dead Kennedys Frankenchrist album which led to an obscenity lawsuit.

Apparently he consulted on Prometheus.

I liked his weird stuff, but I doubt that he’d be so well known if not for his movie work. He actually did some stuff for a European short (making a Giger-esque body suit for a guy and a dog) before his work on Alien. He designed things for Poltergeist II and for Species. He reportedly hated a lot of the CGI effects work for Species, which made his creature look decidedly un-sexy. And I don’t think he was consulted (although he was frequently acknowledged) for the Alien sequels. But he definitely got his name out there with that one. Not only did Alien make him a success, but I think the reverse is true – Even with Ridley Scott as director, I suspect Alien might not be the cultural phenomenon it has become if it hadn’t been for Giger’s artwork. I saw some of the pre-Giger concept work, and it wasn’t really anywhere near as memorable.

Other than his alien-related material, I don’t think any image of his disturbs me more than the wall of buttocks, with alternate penises entering alternate vaginas. The combination of the methodically clinical with the unsettlingly bizarre just makes my skin crawl.

Game over, man.

If some sort of hell exists and he ends up there, I can picture Giger’s thoughts…

“meh, I’ve seen better”

He was still alive? I thought he’d been vivisected by an alien succubus years ago.

Followed by, “Hey… you, with the horns. Want to see something really scary?”

I agree that was his work was disturbing. I love it. I hope he is buried in a bizarre bio mechanical coffin and that a disturbingly erotic memorial is erected at his grave.

Oh for those who didn’t know- McFarlane toys put out a Giger mini sculpture. IMO They did a good job on the sculpting but the paint job was miserable.

His work was also the inspiration of a video game, Dark Seed. It’s dark, scary and hard.

The Clive Barker of graphic arts!

That was a guy who truly found his niche.

Granted, the physical location of that niche was probably an empty tomb in an ancient interstellar ziggurat littered with the exoskeletons of horrific reptilian bipeds.

But I bet that’s the way he liked it.

Sounds like a spot he will have to share with that other guy who used his initials to start his name. Nothing like spending eternity in the company of horrific creatures and old, indifferent gods.

But the timing: I suspect he heard they were going to pull Chris Hadfield’s Space Oddity and it was just more than his creaky heart could bear.
