Sad to hear.
He will always be known as Tony Soprano - despite the other work - but then again, many actors would have loved to have had such a role in their career.
And if ya gotta go, I could think of worse places than on vacation in Italy.

Damn shame, he was a fine actor
I’m stunned and shocked. The man was five years younger than I am. Granted, he was very heavy, but still. I wonder if he knew he had cardio issues.
Shit. My husband just told me about this, and I’m okay with being a little misty about his death.
I’d never heard of him until The Sopranos. I can understand why he wanted to walk away from the character. That was some seriously dark stuff for a purportedly good guy.
RIP, Mr. Gandolfini. You will be missed.
Dammit. That’s some bad news.
Goddammit.
This is really hard news for me. Sorry if I seem repetitive but **The Sopranos **was the high point of TV series, IMHO, and he was fantastic in it.
Slim Whitman, James Gandolfini…who will be number three?
That was unexpected. Last thing I saw him in was The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and his performance as the casino owner was, as always, pitch perfect and totally memorable. So sad, his wife just had a baby recently.
Damn fine actor in a damn fine series. But (re)watching the series will be disturbing from now on. Especially the Kevin Finnerty episodes.
He was meant to be 40. Born in '59.
Wow. This is an epochal event. Kind of like when Hendrix died. One of the truly greats in their field, and their body of work is now at an end.
Very, very sad.
RIP, Tony.
I always liked James Gandolfini, but oddly I have never seen an episode of The Sopranos. Just saw him in movies.
RIP, Tony Soprano.
I remember seeing the show he did for the Wounded Warriors Project a few years ago where he interviewed wounded veterans. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy.
Agreed that The Sopranos was a high water mark for television. Perhaps the greatest series ever. Tony was a sociopath but JG had us empathize, sympathize, and even like the guy at times. Great actor, huge loss. RIP and how sad that he leaves behind a 2 year old.
Shit, he was 15 years younger than me, not five. That’s just sadder than. . .other sad stuff I can think of.
While obviously never one who came across as the picture of a healthy lifestyle I’m really surprised he was only 51 - it’s damn sad.
Rent The Sopranos, starting with season one. I promise, you will not be disappointed.
Goddammit so fucking much.
I’d like to go on record as saying he was one of the sexiest actors - and this comes from a woman who also thinks Liam Neeson is hot fire.
He had me hooked from the minute he waded into Tony Soprano’s pool in that heavy terry cloth bathrobe to commune with the ducks.
Shit.
