The Ohio Players were one of the greatest funk bands ever, making awesome music that sounds as good and as fresh today as it did 40 years ago when they recorded it. These guys totally fucking rocked!
Bo - what a talent. Thank you for pointing this out. When I dig into the funk to play for my kids, there is so much good stuff that doesn’t get enough attention. The Ohio Players, the Gap Band, heck, Sly and the Family Stone - huge names in their day, and within funk aficionados, but they deserve more.
Yeah, I’m a huge funk fan (I’ve seen George Clinton & P-Funk at least a dozen times, for instance), and I’m always afraid that it’s a dying form of music. Hence I’m always thrilled when I discover a band like Lettuce (links in the retro '70s thread of mine).
But Ohio Players are a particular favorite of mine. Fire was the first album of my parents’ album that I “stole” and made my own, and to this day I freaking love listening to it.
