Oh, no. Dead at 70yo from cancer. I still feel like he’s a kid.
Very controversial actor/person. But was great at most of his professional pursuits.
“I say we let him go!!!”
Sad. He was too young.
Everone: “NOOOOOOOOO!!!”
The Spleen is gone. Alas.
Great comic presence. His death scene in the Buffy movie made the film.
He really did an amazing impression of a certain kind of precocious, bratty kid.
Aww, that’s terrible. RIP.
I’m really sorry to hear this. He brought us joy.
Just saw this on the news. He was wonderfully creative from the start. Little known fact, the actress who played Miss Yvonne on PeeWee’s Playhouse, Lynne Marie Stewart plays Charlie’s mom on It’s Only Sunny in Philadelphia. Somewhat more known, Lawrence Fishburne played Cowboy Curtis on the show, and other well known actors like S. Epatha Merkerson and Phil Hartman also were on the show. He wasn’t treated well throughout his career, but his fans didn’t care about the media attack, they loved Pee-Wee. I’m happy he’s over the pain of his illness and whatever pain life laid on him. The Playhouse will go on forever.
I was never a big Pee Wee Herman fan, but he was definitely good at what he did.
I remember seeing him on one of his first national appearances on David Letterman’s show. Nobody knew what the hell this guy’s schtick was, at first. He had an audience member put on green rubber gloves and a Creature from the Black Lagoon mask. He cavorted like a spoiled kid on the chair next to Letterman’s desk. Finally, Letterman asked, deadpan, “Do your parents know you’re out?”
Loved Pee-wee Herman. I have the DVDs somewhere, and I might even have the HBO special. I can’t see Laurence Fishburne without remembering him as Cowboy Curtis, and Phil Hartman will always be Captain Carl to me. (Also, I thought Johann Carol was pretty.)
After… ‘the incident’, a comedy show made Paul Reubens the butt of a joke. The skit had someone selling a Pee-wee Herman doll ‘with Turbo Fist!’ (The dolls arm made a wanking motion.)
I still use Paul Reubens’ line from Buffy The Vampire Slayer: ‘Kill him a lot!’
RIP, Pee-wee. You were a unique and hilarious individual.
I liked Paul on Murphy Brown (6 episodes). Never watched Pee Wee. I knew it was satire, but it didn’t interest me.
Paul was extremely imaginative and very popular. His fans miss him.
RIP
I always liked when he first showed back up on TV after a hiatus and began his speech (at an award ceremony, IIRC) with “heard any good jokes lately?”
I always thought the mug shot hurt Paul’s fan base more than the charge. It was such a shocking change from his Pee Wee image.
A lot of celebrities have a scruffy look off stage. But Pee Wee’s character hinged on his sweet and cuddly image. It was like seeing Mr Rogers unshaven with scraggly hair.
Pee Wee’s Playhouse was great. Also, I liked him as the dealer in Blow.
It is hard to believe that he was 70, I guess that is a benefit of playing a perpetual child.
Large Marge from Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure scared the hell out of me as a child.
Well this is a big bummer. So very sad and so young. Cancer sucks.
I still use the phrase “pull (yourself) up a chair, like Chairee!”
I remember watching him in Cheech and Chong movies. You could tell even then he would be great playing those sort of characters.
