RIP Pussy Cow

Why pussy cow?

Or are you making a comment on how Cal’s dog weren’t a dog?

So no more late night dog Spot spots!

No, the way his ad jingle catchphrase, “Go see Cal,” was slurred in the singing, it sounded like “Pussy cow”. It really did. I knew what this was about just from the thread title. Probably most people who lived in So Cal for any length of time would.

Just found this out, myself. I linked to a compilation of his commercials in another thread, where I mentioned Doper PussyCow.

Cal Worthington and his dog Spot were a staple during my formative years.

Many people think that when they sing ‘Go see Cal, go see Cal, go see Cal’, they’re singing ‘Pussy Cow, Pussy Cow, Pussy Cow’.

You probably need to have grown up in Southern California to understand, but EVERYONE thought it was “pussycow”.

RIP Cal. I’ll come see you someday.

Dead as a redneck’s car up on blocks.

Or Northern California. I grew up with Cal, too, and yeah, we thought he was saying “pussy cow”.

RIP, Cal.

It’s synchronicity. I hadn’t really thought about Cal Worthington (or his “dog” Spot) for quite a whil until you mentioned the user name last week. I also grew up in LA and instantly got the reference. I’m surprised Cal was only 92. I thought of him as old nearly 40 years ago, when I had to suffer through those commercials to find out how Underdog was going to escape his latest predicament.

haha! Memories!

Pretty sure I always thought it was pussy cow. I never could understand why anyone would buy a car from such a self-absorbed carny, but there you go.

I haven’t seen his commercials since the late 70’s, but I immediately knew what this thread was about. I actually got to pet “Spot” once.

I remember moving to the pacific northwest and seeing a Cal Worthington (and his dog Spot!) commercial for the first time… I totally thought it was pussy cow. I had to ask someone what they were really singing.

None of us in Houston thought it was anything other than “Go See Cal”

Must be an accent thing.

(Worthington Chevrolet was on the NW corner of US-59 and Hillcroft until about 10-15 years ago).

I just snapped to the fact of who he was. Here his ads had an accent and a decidedly Texas feel.

Thanks for the reminder bump

RIP Cal

Capt

I remember those commercials…seeing some of his interactions with ‘wild’ animals, it’s a wonder he ever made it to 62, much less 92

Well, you don’t have to have a California accent to hear it as “Pussy cow”. I am British and first heard his ads soon after I first came to California in 1983. I quite spontaneously heard the “pussy” part without having been prompted by any locals, though I think, having gathered that his name was Cal I originally thought they were singing “Pussy Cal”, and that perhaps it was some sort of reference to the tiger he had on a leash in those ads. When “pussy cow” was later suggested to me by a local, it fitted what I heard at least as well. It was really quite difficult to hear it as “Go see Cal,” however, even after I knew. It just did not sound like that.

So was he inspiration for that very underrated classic film Used Cars?

He said he’d eat a bug if he couldn’t sell you a car. Looks like it’s the other way around now.
