RIP Sean Connery

From the BBC:

One of those actors I assumed would live forever…

Wow, that’s a surprise. Damn 2020 claims another great one.

“That’s the last of them Peachy, no more gods to burn.”

Sir Sean Connery died at age 90. He died overnight in his sleep. He had been unwell for some time.

The one true Bond. Professor Jones a damn good Robin Hood. A great career.

Huge loss, loved him.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was an amazing performance for him. The gag was that Indiana Jones Dad is the “James Bond guy”, but that he is the exact opposite of James Bond. While a cute premise, Connery’s delivery and performance made the role my favorite of his.

Basically this scene and its aftermath.

IMDB has 94 film credits for him.
I’ll add Ramirez in Highlander (Even if he wasn’t convincing as an Egyptian/Spaniard)

Brian

Captain Ramius in Hunt for Red October was incredible.
Jim Malone in the Untouchables.
Forrester in Finding Forrester
The Detective Monk in The Name of the Rose
Also General Urquart in the very underrated A Bridge Too Far.

Weird one, I liked him in Darby O’Gill and the little people, a mostly forgotten Disney film.

I always did love one particular line from Goldfinger:

“My dear, there are certain things that are just not done. For example, drinking Dom Perignon '53 above a precise temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s as advisable as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs!”

Considering Paul McCartney recorded the theme to Live and Let Die and Ringo eventually married Barbara Bach (the main Bond girl from The Spy Who Loved Me).

Oh damn. He was THE best Bond.

He was one of those I always had to check if he was still among the living. And now he’s gone.

R.I.P.

I knew I shouldn’t have mentioned the Banshee, and Connery’s role, in Darby O’Gill And The Little People the other day.

I agree with ThelmaLou. Connery was the best Bond. Dr. No is my favourite Bond film because Bond doesn’t rely on ‘gadgets’. (Incidentally, Dr. No takes place after From Russia, With Love. Bond had been poisoned by Rosa Klebb, and was in Jamaica to recover.)

OK, I got the reference.

Another great passes, and the list of black marks against 2020 grows longer.

I wish Connery’s last movie in the US had not been League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but he leaves behind a pretty good filmography. He always seemed the type of actor who didn’t mind appearing in weird movies like Zardoz or even smaller parts if other weird movies like Time Bandits. I loved Darby O’Gill and the Little People when I was a kid and don’t mind admitting that the banshee scared the hell out of me. Here’s hoping Connery and Janet Munro are up in heaven singing another duet.

Always Bond…James Bond. RIP

This. Craig is the best of the follow-ons, but Connery will always be the essential Bond to me.

Rest Well, Sir Connery.

You were most excellent.

And the hits keep comin’.

The Man Who Would Be King was a favorite of mine. Somewhere, Moneypenny is weeping.

The Man Who Would be King of the Popes

When they were casting Dr. No, Ian Fleming thought Sean Connery was completely wrong for the role. (He wanted either David Niven or Roger Moore.) But in the later novels, Fleming added a Scottish element to Bond’s backstory, and his physical descriptions of Bond were ringers for Connery.

Even in clunkers like First Knight or The Presidio, he was always worth watching.

from The Rock:
Nicholas Cage: I’ll do my best.
Connery: Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and @#$% the prom queen.
