RO alert: British tabloids sink to an all-time shit-sucking low

I’d go further, I’d say that most Brits don’t know he is American. They only think of him as Australian.

What’s really ridiculous is when that guy says that nobody is piling on CitiBank, Amex, etc. because of the hacking. Well NO SHIT, they were the VICTIMS of hacking. In this case, NewsCorp was the PERPETRATOR of the hacking. Also, all of those cases were criminals doing the hacking, not a part of the media establishment. That’s a truly desperate attempt to convince their gullible viewers that the poor parent of Fox News is being unnecessarily picked on by all the other "unfair and unbalanced" media bullies.

P.S. Interesting take from Keith Olbermann about his experiences during his brief period of employment at NewsCorp:
Part 1
Part 2 (both are short, but if you only watch one, watch this one)

BTW, Keith Olbermann on CurrentTV will be providing live special coverage of both U.K. and U.S. government inquiries into this matter. Tuesday from 9am to Noon will be live coverage of British Parliament. (DirecTV channel 358)

I guess that makes Murdoch the Wizard of Oz-at long last people are paying attention to the man behind the curtain.

Wanting a foreigner, who cannot even vote in our elections yet seemingly controls their outcome anyway, out isn’t “xenophobia”. Note, Murdoch became a US Citizen for a reason: there’s a restriction on foreigners in the US owning TV stations. It’s high time we followed the US’ lead, given our tabloids are every bit as potent as American television channels in shaping public opinion, and put stringent controls on just who can own nationally circulated newspapers. Either become a British citizen or fuck off.

Hey, that’s very noble of you to suggest Murdoch become a British citizen. Thanks in advance for taking him off our hands!

ten years ago, that might have seemed like a good idea. Now? The likelihood is that in the next few years you will see the current media distribution model replaced by one of people downloading their media, whether it’s text, tv or whatever, from their chosen web distribution service. Short of Chinese level Censorship, you’re going to have a tough time enforcing any sort of control over the nationality of the people running those services.

I don’t think it would actually, If anything we hate Piers Morgan even more.

And others have covered the wider issue better than I can so I’ll leave it at that.

Heck yes, that analogy has got legs hasn’t it?

I think that you people are being overly optimistic. What is the basic problem with Murdoch? Is it that his journos pay minor bribes to get gossip, or pay dirty dicks to engage in monstrously distasteful eavesdropping?

No it is that he owns far too great a percentage of the media, giving him a disproportionate amount of control over (in particular) politicians, to a degree that is outrageous for a private citizen.

Will this scandal change this position? I have no reason to think so. What is going to happen is that a number of journalists and management, up to some level, are going to lose their jobs/get convictions etc. I think the chances of Murdoch himself being criminally sanctioned are close to nil. He probably wasn’t involved in any criminal conduct to a degree sufficient to support a conviction for anything. And even if that is not true, I can’t think of any basis at all for him losing his empire (even if he is sanctioned).

He still has the power available to spin things his way and the whole business will be water under the bridge in the medium term.

and it looks like we aren’t the only ones to pick up on that theme.

A 43-year old woman has just been arrested. Ms. Brooks was born in 1968. Just do the maths!

Edit. It’s just been confirmed that it is her.

Link to the Brooks arrest story.

Of course the bribery allegations are potentially more serious than the phone hacking ones. What I can’t understand is why nothing was done back in 2003 when she stated before a previous parliamentary committee that the paper paid police officers for information. It just seemed to go over the heads of the committee members and was just forgotten about.

Perhaps it was assumed that the information was not confidential, but now its very differant, now its clear that NOTW was collecting information using illegal means.

I also think that things were probably way to comfortable back then, but the mood has changed, the rubbish police investigation to me also shows at the least, complete complacency, but more likely it indicates rather more.

The fact that public outrage has been tested over the expenses affair, and the power of it has been demonstrated is significant, I think they were all just too corrupt and greedy, and believed that we would pretty much accept anything - now there’s much more realisation that once the public are genuinely outraged, it can have a significant political impact - David Cameron had better beware, I still think there may be more to his story, it certainly shows astonishingly bad judgement on his part.

The is now a whole political generation that has been tainted, and we have not begun to really uncover the whole of it, at the moment most of this is based upon reasonable suspicions, just wait when they all start blaming each other.

This YouTube clip shows Brooks admitting paying the police for information

Sir Paul Stephenson just resigned as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, live on the telly!

John Yates still hasn’t resigned, has he? Wonder if this’ll push him over too.

Yeah, he’ll go soon… no way he can stay much longer.

Maybe. Maybe not.

Mind you, anytime anyone recommends an “independent inquiry” first it usually means “faff until everyone is sick of the issue and then quietly drop it” so you may be right. But it’s only Nick Clegg and no one listens to him.

Nothing will be done without some sort of inquiry. Clegg has realised and said what everyone else in power will also conclude: being seen to be responsible for moving against Murdoch pre-emptively and directly is potential career suicide because if the move goes wrong and Murdoch is left with any power (and he will be) they will be Murdoch’s enemy for life. So the most anyone will do as a first step is suggest an inquiry.
