I was going to mention this one. It cuts both ways though. During the Atlanta child murders, some friends & I decided to take in a Braves games. One of my friends invited a co-worker, who happened to be black. As we were driving thru a black neighborhood on the way to the stadium, the black guy (in a car with three white guys) decided it would be funny to start beating on the window screaming “HEP ME! HEP ME!”.
I lived near DC when that happened. I’ve had a strong distaste for Stern ever since, and I actively avoid any exposure to him. (Not meant in a trench coat way, either.)
That would have been funny about the plane that landed in the Hudson, where nobody died. About a crash where people died? Tone-deaf, to say the very least.
A personal friend of mine was on that flight and was killed in the crash. IIRC Stern called to ask the price of a ticket from National to the 14th Bridge.
I generally like black humor, and little is too extreme for me to laugh out. But because I knew someone on the flight I’ve also had a bad association with Stern since.
I’m in agreement that there are lines. But if your stock in trade is walking the fine line between shocking but palatable and shocking, you’re going to deeply hurt some people. I’ve been listening to Stern since the 1980’s in NYC and must admit there are times when I’d turned him off. For MONTHS at a time, because of lines he crossed. But I got over it. Know why? For all of his virulent stances and incredibly distasteful bits and moments, not once has he advocated something illegal. He may have joked about it, but he’s not gone and crossed lines other radio personalities have.
His stock in trade is not advocating real violence and mayhem and destruction of people’s lives. It’s pushing buttons. I get it.
I’ve yet to hear a 9/11 WTC joke I found even faintly amusing, so I strongly relate to your stance re:Stern. Just sayin’, he’s not dangerous. He’s just a wiseass.
The worst thing about Stern is that he isn’t dangerous. He likes to pretend he’s shocking but he always plays it safe. He’s Katy Perry - just shocking enough to get noticed but always staying tame enough to be popular with the crowds.
THis.. I casually ‘know’ Chris Dimino.. He didnt take part in the skit but stood by while Cellini and Shapiro did it. As my dad told me at a young age.. a lot of guys are in jail because they were in the backseat of a car and sat there. I also find little decent to listen to Atlanta in the am.. The local public radio diva kills NPR for classical music early.. This morning show was pretty decent.. but the recent financial issues and the fact that their signal sucks seems to brought this to a head. Stupid skit.. who signs off on that?
