What I would like to know more about, are the actions of the engineering teacher that Ahmed first showed the clock to.

The engineering teacher clearly knew it was a clock. Did the administration talk to him prior to calling the police? Did he stand up for Ahmed at all? I would be disappointed if he didn’t attempt to be the voice of reason, considering that it sounds like Ahmed made the clock to show him in particular.

IIRC, the engineering teacher was impressed but told Ahmed not to show the clock to other teachers, that they wouldn’t understand.

Let’s ignore the stupidity. Let’s even ignore the questioning a minor with no parents or counselors present. Here’s what gets me about this story.

You have a teacher who took the clock away in 2nd period. Ahmed is pulled out of class by officers in 6th period. He’s brought to the principal’s (or vice principal’s) office, given a lengthy interrogation and ultimately arrested. Now, if the administrators are to be believed, they either thought it was a bomb or were at least uncertain as to what it was.

Where is the clock during all of this?
Why was a bomb squad not called?
Why was the school not evacuated?
Are there any policies in place in this school district for dealing with an imminent threat like a bomb scare? If not, why not? If so, were any of them followed in this instance?

Not to mention that in the picture I saw, there was nothing attached to the device that looked like explosive. Furthermore, one thinks they could have asked the engineering (?) teacher about it.

The whole thing reeks of a bunch of paranoid bigots picking on a little kid.

I know about that part… I think the engineering teacher had a responsibility to speak up and be an advocate for Ahmed later when the attacks started, and tell the administration and police that Ahmed put together a digital clock to show him. I haven’t heard if he played any role after the fact.

[Dallas Hackers have Ahmed’s back!

If his school won’t support a student who is clearly interested in science, engineering, and tinkering, the local hacking community says it will. A local hacker who goes by the name of WhiskeyNeon has given Mohamed’s parents a year-long membership to TheLab.ms, a new hackerspace in the Dallas metro area—and other members of the space are working on getting him a lifetime membership. TheLab.ms only allows people older than 18 to have an official membership, but Mohamed will be allowed to use it.

“We’re giving him an Arduino, solar panels, a lot of hardware as encouragement because we support what he’s doing,” WhiskeyNeon told me in a phone conversation. “As a hacker community, this is our backyard. We’re going to stand up and show people what this is all about. We want to encourage him.”

Mohamed has been officially invited to give a talk at the next Dallas Hackers Association meeting, and others in the community are working on getting him memberships to other laboratories in the area.
