Open Road Song by Eve 6. Not a big fan of them, but that song never fails to make me drum my fingers on the steering wheel and sing along.
Yes, you do RC.
I do now.
“Radar Love” was the first tune I thought of when I read the subject. Put it on first. Put it last, too. This is the ultimate road song, IMNSHO. “Hot Rod Lincoln” is a good choice, but only the Commander Cody version.
Also:
“Sweet Mary I’m Coming Home Now” - artist unknown, from 70’s?
“Baby Wrote Me a Letter” - ditto.
“Ventura Highway” - America?
“Look for America” - Simon & Garfunkel
“Roll Me Away” - Bob Seger
“Walk of Life” - Dire Straits
“Hitching a Ride” - Vanity Fair
And the whole soundtrack to “American Graffiti”.
Yeah, I was a kid in the 70’s. Does it show that much?
The Boxtops, IIRC.
“Running with the Devil” - Van Halen
“409” - The Beach Boys
“Fly Me Courageous” - Drivin’ & Cryin’
Two comments…

For some reason, I dug the White Lion version of “Radar Love” better than the Golden Earring original. I think it makes a better driving song, too.

Almost any David Lee Roth-era Van Halen song makes for a good road song. “Panama,” “Unchained,” and “Hot for Teacher” make me want to stomp on the gas when they come on the radio.
I had to flush my eyes with water for 10 minutes and seek medical attention promptly after that post.
Doobie Brothers - Rockin’ Down the Highway, China Grove
Doors - L.A. Woman
REO Speedwagon - Roll with the Changes
The Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated
Blackfoot - Train, Train
Tangled Up in Blue - Bob Dylan
Running Down A Dream by Tom Petty
I don’t know why, but that song always makes me wish I was on my way somewhere else. In a good way.
Running on Empty
Take It Easy (Jackson Browne’s original)
Thanks, Coldfire - I think you’re right.
Add:
“LA Freeway Blues” - Jerry Jeff Walker
Padeye, when you get all of these compiled, are we gonna see you hawking them on late night TV?
“Mobile” - the Who
“Mercury Blues” - NOT the country version, but the one by… Steve someone. Gaah, I can’t remember the name. Another 70’s rocker, the guy that did “Swingtown”.
Steve Miller! That’s him!
“Reach Out and Take It” -forgot the group, but it’s on the Heavy Metal soundtrack.
Heading out on the Highway by Judas Priest, I find the live version better.
Clear Night Moonlight by Golden Earring, too bad all people listen to by GE is Radar Love
I’ll show you something Special by Balaam and the Angel on the Plains, Trains and Automobiles sdk
I could throw some motorcycle tunes out there but you didn’t ask for them!
Viva Las Vegas by the Dead Kennedys. Great damned song.

Just exactly how many CD’s are you taking? This sounds like one of those CD-a-month clubs:
For only 9.99 (+ S&H) you get

now I have Willie Nelson stuck in my head…
“On the road again…
just can’t wait to get on the road again…”
I’ve got a feeling I’ve posted this somewhere else but anyway, you can’t have a truly great road song compilation without *** On the Road Again by Canned Heat***. However, if you don’t like that one then ***It’s the End of the World as we know it (and I feel fine) by R.E.M. *** is also a kickass driving track.
Taking the Kids to Disney World by Uncle Bonsai.
Red Barchetta - Rush
Girl’s got Rythym - AC/DC (Of course if the girl gets that rythym going, pull over.)
Spanish Pipedream - John Prine
Just about anything off of A1A album by Jimmy Buffett
