Breaking story. No cause of death yet.
Oh no, not Hagrid!
He was in a lot of stuff. He worked pretty constantly since about 1980, even showing up on Frasier.
Well that’s a bummer!
I’ll also always remember him as Zukovsky, who was a lot of fun in the two James Bond films in which he appears. I wish they hadn’t killed him off in The World Is Not Enough.
Aww.
I also liked him in Goldeneye.
He also co-starred with Eric Idle in Nuns on the Run.
I was 13 when that came out and it was my kind of humor at the time.
I’ll always remember him as the sympathetic ticket seller in Let It Ride.
It seems weird and a little unfortunate that his entire long career is reduced simply to a role in the Harry Potter films, at least in the CNN article.
I think I remember him mostly from Nuns on the Run.
Robbie Coltrane was one of the people who came up in the “alternative comedy” scene in the UK, appearing in shows like Alfresco and The Comic Strip Presents, The Young Ones and Blackadder. Aside from Rik Mayall, most of those folks are still alive, and many have gone on to become big international stars - Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, and Coltrane himself.
I have quite an affinity for this era of British comedians. I always think of them as “one of the people from The Comic Strip.” Always kind of weird to see how they’re remembered way more for their blockbuster roles. I’m glad Coltrane has gotten that level of fame, I hope he enjoyed it.
ETA: This isn’t a reply to @Dewey_Finn. I posted it at the same time. I assume it’s an agreement with his sentiment.
Not surprising that people will remember him most for Hagrid, but he was in a lot of stuff over the years, and was always good (including a fine Falstaff in Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V). May he rest in peace.
I wouldn’t have known he was in a Harry Potter movie. I avoid everything Harry Potter related to the extent possible so I’m not a good measure of this but I see he’s recognized in this thread for his other work.
He was a wonderful character in Let It Ride. It’s not easy to stand out in a movie replete with over the top comic performances by the entire cast.
The first place I saw him.
I liked him, but my wife really liked him. She’ll be sad to hear this.
To me he will always be the besotted master chef Gustave LaRoche.
Nuns On The Run stands out to me because it would have been a black hole of suckitude with lesser leads.
“Spectacles, testicles, wallet, and watch.”
If you’ve never seen Cracker, and you can - it’s well worth a watch.
No love for Cracker, apparently?
I’d seen him in the Harry Potter retrospective special that was on HBO earlier this year; he seemed kind of drawn, and didn’t look well.
He made a very good Hagrid, but I agree with other posters, he was great in other, earlier roles, as well.
That’s pretty much all I remember from Nuns on the Run.
IIRC “So the Trinity is like a shamrock- small, pretty and green.”
