Robert Reich for Pres. in '08?

Gah! I can be an idiot sometimes… Of course Hillary would be a terrible VP choice. She’d take the limelight away from the guy at the top even if she never said a word. Can’t happen. Shouldn’t happen.

Because she has never once said publicly that she has any interest in the job. Because every time she’s been asked about she says she has no intention of running. Because she and most Democrats know that she’s not a viable candidate. She’s been far too demonized by the right. She’s been turned into a cartoon villain by Republicans and the Dems know that she can’t overcome the intertia of those ingrained prejudices and assumptions to appeal to the wider electorate. The dems know that the Republicans WANT Hillary to run. She would be their dream opponent. She’s the classic, stereotypical “feminazi” who wants to run the “village” and raise taxes and socialize everything and not take orders from men. Oh the fun they would have putting that bitch in her place with an embarrassing landslide against her (and don’t deny that’s exactly how the righties envision things). The Dems aren’t stupid and they aren’t going to throw Brer Rabbit into the briar patch.

The Republicans kept saying she would run in 2004 even after the primaries were well under way. For some reason they’ve convinced themselves that Hillary wants to take over the country and it’s unfathomable to them that maybe she means what she says when she says she doesn’t have any plans to run for president.

It’s still “porn” in the Pit. Maybe Dio is learning how to play nice in GD.

Yeah, he’s almost European Left and his way of speaking, while entertaining when he’s on Marketplace ripping apart some Republican policy, would probably turn off the majority of Americans. We like to pretend our leaders have SOME humility and it’s impossible to pretend Bob’s humble.

The FOB factor might be a problem, too. Only Roger Clinton (assuming they shared a room while children) and possibly Hillary (meow!) have slept more nights in the same room as Bill Clinton.

(counting…Dukakis…Kerry…) Cite, please?

Yeah, “European left” is exactly what I was thinking. I almost put that in my first post.

I’ve always respected Reich ever since reading his book, “The Work of Nations” in college. It really opened my eyes as to what was going on in the global economy and that America’s days as a manufacturing nation were winding down and that information and technology were where the country was headed.

But no way could he run for president. Too academic. Too short. And I think “Locked In The Cabinet” made him persona non grata among the Clinton wing of the party. If I’m not mistaken, Clinton said Reich was one of the three cabinet appointments he regretted, along with Janet Reno and… someone else, can’t remember who.

Jeeze, John, we’re agreeing more than disagreeing these days.

If you wanna wager, I’ll take it.

To me, Reich is an agreeable, engaging guy, who makes a better pundit than candidate. I like that he has an opinion, but often find myself disagreeing with him. I wouldn’t mind discussing ideas with him, though. And until The Daily Show appearance I had no idea how small he was. It’s not often that Jon Stewart towers over someone.

Oh, and he has a beard. Who was the last guy elected with a beard?

He often makes jokes about his height. I agree that he’s better as a pundit than as a pol.

Grant?

Dropzone: Yeah, we are agreeing a lot lately, aren’t we. I couldn’t remember if we had a history of disagreements or not, but I kinda thought we did.

I haven’t changed, have you?

If you honestly believe this, then you are as hopelessly, spitefully partisan as you blanketly accuse “righties” of being.

Harrison.

Well, you’re fairly conservative and I’m fairly liberal but neither of us regularly says something so patently stupid as to inspire memorable fits of wrath in the other. And I haven’t changed that I’ve noticed, but I tend not to notice much.

Only if he thinks the Dems would have been all dreary eyed and apologetic had they beaten Bush in a landslide.

The story I heard: Robert Reich and Bill Clinton met on the boat over to England where they were headed for their Rhodes Scholarship studies. Robert was green in the gills and blowing chunks over the railing when Bill first saw him. That was the start of a long friendship.

As for the OP…Reich for Pres. in '08? Um, gee I hope not?

I call bullshit. There’s a reason why there have only been a handful of black people elected or even appointed to high levels of government. People say they’d vote for a black person, but they won’t. History (in the short and long term) has proven that. Hopefully it will change, but I wouldn’t count on it happening anytime soon. There is only one black senator, and even he probably wouldn’t have been elected had it not been for the self destruction of his opponents.

If those 3 were running, I think it would be a toss up between Powell and Clinton. Powell and Condi share positions on most of the important issues. No way Condi would win. Aside from the fact that she’s not a particularly engaging speaker, she is ugly. I can’t imagine many people voting for her. At least Powell is a non-threatening war hero, Condi has very little going for her.

Yeah. He’s a professor at where I did my undergrad (Brandeis), and I was shocked when I saw him march in with the other professors. I had only seen him on TV, and had always thought that he was of normal height.

A humble politician is as useless as a cowardly soldier.

Get real, Cadfael. Even in the 21st Century, there are still a lot of white Americans (mostly in South) who will not vote for a black candidate under any circumstances. And a somewhat smaller number, I think, who will not vote for a female candidate under any circumstances.

I don’t think it’s all that silly an accusation to say that many Republicans would, if Hillary runs, like to see her lose and lose badly.

I think most Democrats would want their candidate to win by a large margin, too.

Ed Koch is actually over six feet in real life. For some reason he comes across very small on television. I saw him in person in the 1980’s and thought him quite good looking.

I like Reich (Locked in the Cabinet was amusing and well written) but he’s more liberal than Hillary and a lot less charming than Bill.
