Robertson Caruso

First off, I’m mightily pleased with the variants on the “theme” of this thread and how the interpretations of “what’s up?” have covered so much ground.

In the very beginning I had sort of a Pullet Surprise thing in the corners of my mind, and didn’t realize that was what I was looking for. So I just dumped the title on you and hoped somebody would get some other examples going.

Hearing such things in jokes and puns always brings a laugh (or at least a smirk) but it’s hard just to call them up on demand.

But maybe the linked article will help you remember some of those things. If not, keep up the fun with the offshoots of the “idea” – whatever it is.

Richard Stanz

I am still trying to locate the term for this kind of misspeaking and am hoping to find something more specific than homophone which seems rather pedestrian for such a misuse.

I did locate some other examples at http://www.worldwizzy.com/learn/index.php/The_Sopranos about halfway down the page under the heading Malapropisms where there’s this paragraph:

It’s the Captain Teebs thing especially that I see as in the same vein as this thread’s title here.

I keep finding lists of terms with examples and none seem to zoom in on this particular device/misuse. Any help?

Anybody?

It’s Robinson Caruso, ‘The Singing Castaway’!

Joining him on stage will be Marcel Cousteau, the underwater mime!

Good grab!

Francisco Bizarro, a little known Conquistador that, by exchanging gold for trinkets in the New World, amassed an enormous amount of trinkets.

Neil Angstrom, the man that took a very, very, I really mean very small step for mankind.

Jimmy Bendix, manufacturer of the Hey Shoe automobile brake pad.

Hanna Barbera, she created the first animation studio in Sweden.

Richard Hawkings, author of The Time Delusion book.

No I hadn’t. Reminded me of this:
Un petit d’un petit
S’étonne aux Halles
Un petit d’un petit
Ah! degrés te fallent
Indolent qui ne sort cesse
Indolent qui ne se mène
Qu’importe un petit d’un petit
Tout Gai de Reguennes.

Helps if you speak French.

Olive, the other reindeer.

Christopher Columbo

Just to see what might be out there I did a Yahoo! search on “Robertson Caruso” and got several hits. I won’t link to them, but if you’re curious you might find your own search rewarding.

Super Mario Batali- With more sauce!
Carmina Buran- a Space Opera that never flew.

Elbert Ainstan: originator of a theory regarding how long relatives can visit without overstaying their welcome.

I happened upon a new term in the process of working a puzzle just now: Eggcorn which seems to be a variation on the same theme as some of the posts ion this thread.

If you’re an acrostic puzzle fan you can find the one I worked at E-Crostic Software for August 11, 2014.

Among some of the examples there are:

gladly, the cross-eyed bear
lead us not into Penn Staion

Harley Donaldson

There’s a porn star named Norma Stitz.
