Can some one sum up the differences between the original Macross plot and the Robotech 1st generation story?
I’ve seen Robotech, and I’m curious regarding the original story. Of course the purists say the original is vastly superior, I grew up on (and am sentimentally attached to) the Macross of Robotech. I’d like to see the original, but want to know a little more about it before I shell out the bucks.
So, what are the differences and which do you like better?
I haven’t seen the original Macross yet. I just wanted to chip in here to say that Captain Gloval is the bomb. 
Well, I don’t know anything about Macross vs. Robotech, but I do enjoy the fact that the American producers took a completely unrelated show (Mospeada) and incorperated it into the Robotech storyline.
(Invid Invasion is, after all, the best in the Robotech series.)
Actually, all 3 segments of Robotech came from completely unrelated shows (don’t let the titles fool you…Super Dimentional Fortress Macross and Super Dimentional Calvary Southern Cross have nothing in common other than the transforming Mecha.)
As to the changes - to Macross…well, unlike Southern Cross, it’s not completely unrecognisable. The basic plot and relationships remain more or less the same, but a lot of the backstory (what the word ‘Protoculture’ refers to, the exact nature of the Zentraedi) was tweaked to make it fit into the new overarching storyline.
And Minmei’s singing is apparently the work of Satan no matter which version.
