Rock music remixes

So I’m basically looking for the best rock music remixes out there, having heard the Crystal Method version of Magic Carpet Ride (originally by Steppenwolf). Any suggestions for me?

Maybe try R.E.M.'s Finest Worksong remixes - there was a version with added horns and another. Perhaps also some of Arthur Baker’s remixes from the '80s, also. And there’s Royksöpp’s great remix of Coldplay’s Clocks and Fatboy Slim’s Brimfull of Asha (Orig. Cornershop).

I’ll post more if I think of them.

I never really saw the point of remixes. It’s not like a good live version, where the group can try something different. All you hear is the original song with some studio crap added. So what?

This is true of a bad remix, but a good remix can be fascinating. A remix can often give a different interpretation to a song, highlight certain features, or in extreme cases, allow the remixer to build almost an entirely new song from a few elements of another. Of course, remixing is often useful in allowing the song to be enjoyed in a new context. For every bland club mix that adds a thumping house beat under the basic melody, there are plenty of mixes that allow, for instance, a rock song to be included naturally in a dj set.

A good remix has the same appeal as a good cover. For instance, the Royksöpp version of Clocks recasts Coldplay’s moody Radiohead-aping Brit-rock ballad as a shimmering new-wave electro-pop track. A big improvement as far as I’m concerned.

Theres a DJ Shadow remix of ‘If dolphins were Monkeys’ by Ian Brown that’s far better than the original IMO.
Also, if you can track it down, the Cornelius mix of ‘Tsunami’ by The Manic Street Preachers rocks, simply by adding a kind of feedback loop to all the elements of the song.

For an interesting pseudo-remix, try Freelance Hellraiser. He took (for example) Smells Like Teen Spirit, and dubbed Bootylicious over the awesome guitar riff. He’s done some more good covers/cross-mixes, too.

After seeing BERLIN on VH1’s, Bands Reunited,I had to have their CD with the song,“Metro” included. I raced over to Tower Records and the only CD they had
that included the song was, BERLIN the greatest hits REMIXED. I bought it and
am, O.K. with it. There are,2 versions of “Metro” “Sex” and “Dancing in Berlin”.
What I most dislike about this CD is on some of the Tracks,a rapper mix’s in…
The CD has 14 tracks.by CLEOPATRA CLP-0760-2. You probably should be a die-
hard Berlin fan before schelling out the $19.00.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard an Arthur Baker remix that I’ve actually enjoyed. For example the club remix of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ is all right, but it’s more of a novelty track, you know, just not something I would listen to more than once or twice. But then again, I’m not into dance music. What other remixes by Baker would you recommend?

I partied with Røyksopp once. They were really nerdy.
