Rock n Roll Hall of Fame RRHoF 2017 Inductees

I’m unsure who has and hasn’t been nominated but can obviously check Wikipedia to see who is not in. Some of the following may have been nominated before.

Slade would be down my list from the UK - but Maiden, Kate Bush, Roxy Music, Brian Eno, Joy Division/New Order and The Smiths all merit consideration, I would I say.

I CTRL+F’d the list - how come Sonic Youth aren’t in? How come The Pixies aren’t in? Prog not my forte, so will take people’s opinions on Moody Blues as being worthy at face value. Appreciate that someone has pointed out that Kraftwerk have been nominated before but that probably needs sorting out sooner rather than later too, to be honest, and given other genres of music get more than one representative, rather than just assuming that one is all you need, I’d be looking at Neu and Can too. Similarly, just because Metallica got in, shouldn’t prevent Slayer from being looked at seriously.

I see what you did there…

Journey, but not INXS?

Journey, but not Duran Duran?

Journey, but not Seals & Crofts?

Sorry.

Journey. Just “Journey?!” is enough. They’re harmless. A fine, harmless pop-rock band.

Whatever.

I’m surprised none of those are in already. You’ve pretty much hit every band I’d have on my off-the-too-of-my-head hundred influential artists, including Neu! and Can. I think the hall, were I running it, should strike a balance between popular and influential. Like them or not, Journey would have a space in my hall, as would The Pixies and Slayer.

I’m seeing a lot of top-selling and influential songsters being mentioned in this thread, which would be fine if we were talking about a Music Hall Of Fame…but we’re not. Here is a list of Joan Baez’ albums: Which ones were Rock in any way, shape or form?

You can hear her rock side on Play Me Backward.

Hall of Fame implies that not everyone can be in. Without that fact it has no meaning.

But instituting the HOF was a deal with the devil, for the short term glory of it, without thinking about what the future was going to look like.

Because now everyone anyone likes is “supposed” to be in there. You don’t have to have been “excellent” at all. Lots of whining and equivalencies.

There should be pride in having been a really good band and not getting into the HOF, but good luck with that now the genie is out.

Joan Baez 5 is a great LP. She is an influence more than a rocker. I can see the HOF seeing that influence as being honorable.

Folk-rock was maybe the most important hyphenated offshoot of rock, and she was a gateway to those events, and an original part of the mix.

That’s what I got.

Yes. Fortunately, none of the “original” (ca. 1967) members are dead yet. (Tony Clarke died in 2010, I believe, and he was sometimes considered to be the sixth Moody.) MB predated EL&P and Yes by several years.

The Moodies albums went on as soon as we lit up.

Our candles, I mean.

That’s the problem with Journey. What’s special about them?

If you can say “Why X but not Y?” for 10 values of Y, X was a terrible choice.

When they indicted Fleetwood Mac (randomly chosen example) nobody seriously said “Why Fleetwood Mac and not Gerry Rafferty?” or whomever. There is clearly no obvious Y to Fleetwood Mac’s X.

Well, there was that Journey video game. How many bands got that, huh?

I personally think they get somewhat unfairly maligned. I’m not intimate with their discography, but Escape was a wonderful album and one of the albums that inspired me to become a musician and play in bands. Yeah, my tastes changed when I dug back into punk, post-punk, noise rock, etc., but you can’t tell me that’s not a solid album with memorable melodies, great hooks, and musicianship.

Yeah, I don’t get all the Journey hate either. They were one of the most popular arena rock bands of their day, and “Don’t Stop Believin’” is the #1 most downloaded song from the 20th century. They may not have influenced the future of rock and roll in any significant way but their legacy is certainly more enduring than say, oh, Little Anthony & the Imperials.

But it does explain why Warren Zevon is still out. Wenner hated the guy, from what I have heard.

Oh come on, their music wasn’t that bad.

I can’t think of anything more inconsequential than which bands/performers get into the R&R Hall of Fame, except maybe Rolling Stone’s rankings of the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time.

Food for argument, OK. But I’m hardly going to change my listening habits based on these sorts of popularity contests.

*speaking of HoF honors, shouldn’t Carl Mays get into both the Baseball and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? He was famous for his “chin music”.

My list wasn’t intended as absolute or a ranking… I was just pointing out a couple of artists from the UK who should be shown some recognition.

There’s also T-Rex, The Specials, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, The Cure, Madness, ELO, et al…

All very successful acts globally and extremely influential in their genres.

Oops, somehow I missed that Kraftwerk were nominated this year. It’s about time …but they should be in already. I’m no fan of electronica …but no musician or music fan can ignore their massive contribution to the evolution of modern music.

ELO, of course, actually made it in this week.

So what? KISS got a kick-ass pinball machine.

Sweet! I never knew that. KISS pinball has got to be better than the Journey video game (which I actually played within the last week, before even making the previous post.) So both 70s bands with arcade machine spinoffs are in the hall!

Not to mention a comic book printed with ink that had KISS blood in it.
