Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: Who's Left?

Bands that should be in but aren’t and probably will not be:
Motorhead, Iron Maiden, who will be eligable next year, and Golden Earring. Why Rush isn’t in I’ll never know, but Black Sabbath has said they don’t want to be in.

I would vote for Prince, Blondie, ELO and The Sex Pistols in that order.

Prince was hugely influential and creative for a large part of his career. He has seemed to veer toward “Michael Jackson Wierd” lately but for most of the 80’s and early 90’s he was extraordinary.

Blondie. Arguably recorded the first ever rap record along with a bunch of really great tunes and lets face it, Debbie Harry was seriously hot

ELO were, and still are, unique. Nobody else sounds like them and they made some really great songs.

The Sex Pistols were undeniably a massive influence on music during their short heyday.

It shouldn’t be called the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It should be called something like the American Music Hall of Fame, since the term “rock and roll” has morphed considerably since it was introduced in 1955 or so.

Then you could have a jazz wing, a hip-hop wing, an R&B wing, and so on.

When does Van Halen become eligible? Their first album was relesed in 1978.

Are they already inducted, and I just don’t see their name on the RRHoF website, or do they become eligible next year?

Blondie would be the first to admit they did not record the first major rap record. (That honor normally goes to “Rappers Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang.)

The first rap record to top the pop charts? Yes.

Already in Use, George Harrison is on the ballot this year. The full list of nominees is:

George Harrison (as a solo artist)
Prince
John Mellencamp
Jackson Browne
The Sex Pistols
Black Sabbath
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Gram Parsons
Patti Smith
The Dells
The “5” Royales
Bob Seger
The Stooges
Traffic
ZZ Top

And of course, I’m pushing for Duane Allman as a sideman (I know, I know, but his resume is truly outstanding). And Tom Dowd should be in there as a non-performer (producer).

Dowd-excellent choice, but too bad would be posthumous. Is Sam Phillips in?

Mary Wells: I meant her, but got her confused with Mary Wilson (who hasn’t really had a solo career outside of the Supremes.) In retrospect, Patti Labelle would be a better candidate than either of them (and a jam version of Lady Marmalade at the induction ceremony would bring down the house.)

Johnny Maestro: A longer career, sure, but being in mulitple groups actually hurts him (and Steve Winwood even more), since the HOF doesn’t look at composite careers. “Sixteen Candles” aside, I don’t think the Crests have much of a shot.

Dixie Hummingbirds: Well, I always thought of the Staple Singers as more of a gospel outfit.

Chubby Checker: Pretty much the last well-known solo artist from that era not in, but his work is pretty much novelty records (Twist, Fly, Pony, anything else?). It would be almost like inducting Van McCoy for starting a big craze with “Do the Hustle.” Plus, Wilson Pickett’s “Land of 1000 Dances” covers the same ground with ten times the energy and enthusiasm of anything put out by Checker.

And of course Sam Phillips is in. He’s one of the inaugural members of the Hall. His Sun Records studio is one of the exhibits.

No, they are eligible. The hall is just crocks though. There’s a big discussion on this at classicrockforums

Well, I figured that if the Bee-Gees are in…(although they had a long career as an art/pop band before Saturday Night Fever.)

They’re mostly their because I wanted a band that started with A to balance out ZZ Top.

These guys have to be in, or I am not going to the Hall:

Gwar
Mucky Pup
Bob Cock and the Yellow Sock
Revolting Cocks
The Rubber Band
AND, of course, the handshake

Paul Revere and the Raiders
These guys never got the recognition they deserve so chances are the Hall of Fame will continue to bypass them.
Maybe they had an undeserved reputation as “teeny-bopper” type rockers. Also, maybe their “whacky” behavior and performances made people not think of them as serious musicians. However, I always thought of them as similar to a comic ice skater - a skater who has to be damned good to make things look silly.
They were the archetypal garage rock band and probably the first punk rock band. As far as rockers, just listen to their rendition of “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone”.

The thus-far omission of Lynyrd Skynyrd by the Hall of Fame committee proves that the** Rock and Roll Hall of Fame** is but a silly and cheesy trumped-up joke.

The nomination of the Five Royals as a **Rock and Roll **group is a belated insult to their exceptional genius and to the entire transcendentally innovative genre of Rhythm and Blues.

What? Did some poster say that Patsy Cline was nominated?
Geez! That’s like the** Queen of England** being nominated Home Coming Queen at the annual** Blount County Pig-roast and Ball**.

Has the world gone mad?

Where the hell is Aerosmith?

Man, I hate ABBA even more after I was forced to see Mamma Mia.

Like my Dad said when I told him I was going to see Mamma Mia, “Why would you go to that? Those songs sucked 20 years ago.” Touche, Dad.

And Rush is way, way overrated. Neil Pert (sp?) is the most overrated, masturbatory musician of all time.

I’d suport:
George Harrison
Dire Striats
Tull
Yes
Traffic
Genesis/Peter Gabriel
Prince
Lou Reed
The Meters

Nicky Hopkins. He’s been dead since '94, but for twenty years he had to be the greatest session pianist in rock. Take a look at who he’s played with. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Who, the Jeff Beck Group, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service to name a few, and he’s not in the hall of fame???

Well, the new inductees were announced about a week or two ago, and I haven’t seen any comments about it, so here’s the list…

Prince
George Harrison
ZZ Top
Jackson Browne
The Dells

Forgot Bob Seger
