Rock / Scissors / Paper alternative

On a break at work during the mind numbing exercise of database design (something I’ve never done on scale before) about something I know nothing about. It leaves a lot to be imagined. If they wanted me to do it about something I know it’d be much easier and much less numbing, however they don’t, and it is.

So during break I gave myself a brain massage by reading web comics, and one suggested by my roomie J was Comedity which has an awesome alternative to Rock / Scissors / Paper…

Pirate / Ninja / Cowboy

Pirate beats Ninja
Ninja beats Cowboy
Cowboy beats Pirate

It’s brilliant!

Except a cowboy wouldn’t beat a pirate – a pirate would absolutely kick the cowboy’s ass.

What, like ninjas are really going to beat pirates? Let’s be honest here.

There’s a logic to it:
Pirates outswashbuckle ninjas.
Ninjas ambush cowboys.
Cowboys outshoot pirates.

Rules, as I see it:
Pirate=crooked forefinger (hook!)
Ninja=forefinger pointed straight up (sword!)
Cowboy=forefinger pointed out, thumb up (gun!)

Giants, Wizards, and Elves! We play it at scout camp. Giants beat elves; elves beat wizards; wizards beat giants. It’s also a group game (imagine two groups of children running towards each other pretending to be either giants, wizards, or elves and then tagging each other as appropriate) and occasionally a high impact sport (CITs are vicious!).

How about jan / ken / pon? No, wait…

Rock, Paper, Scissors, Spock, Lizard.

Scissors cut Paper.
Paper covers Rock.
Rock crushes Lizard.
Lizard poisons Spock.
Spock phasers Scissors.
Scissors cut Lizard.
Lizard eats Paper.
Paper refutes Spock.
Spock phasers Rock.
Rock crushes Scissors.

Have you mentioned this game to Robert Hamburger? I think he would have a few things to say about the format.
