Rockstar INXS 9/12 & 9/13/05

MiG: Kiss from a Rose / Paint it Black

Marty: Trees / Creep

JD: Pretty Vegas / Money

Suzie: Unkown (although there are rumors floating around)

Rumor: Interstate Love Song (STP) / What’s Up (4 Non-Blondes)

In the interview clinic, INXS said all the “rockers” (I hate that word) were good performers and vocalists, but…

MiG is too theatrical and a pushover

Marty seems to want control

JD may be too much into games

Suzie can’t handle an interview, which is bad for the media

I’m starting to think that Marty has surpassed MiG as first choice for INXS. I think the band likes the fact that Marty has a vision of the future of INXS and he’s not afraid to say it.

Also, it doesn’t seem fair to let them sing Trees and Pretty Vegas again.

If they eliminate this week, JD is gone.

Bump once.

I don’t have cable, so don’t see the “other” show – but am looking forward to tonight’s performances.

Go Suzie!

I find myself caring less and less, which is unfair to the show because I think it’s really been a well done production. They’ve sent the right people home. The band seems to be made up of some very nice men. Dave is dorky, but dorky is okay. And I don’t even mind Brooke Burke.

My disaffection might be laid at the feet of TWoP, really. The admin there is so heavy-handed that discussions got squashed and I haven’t been able to get fired up again. Oh well.

MiG and Marty would both be very good choices.

Yeah, TWoP was horrible. I found other boards that were a lot more reasonable.

Anyway, back on topic:

I thought that the ‘interview’ portion laid out some of the pros and cons of each singer (I, too, hate the “Rocker” designation) pretty well. Here’s how I see them stacking up:

MiG
Pros: Polished performer, fairly consistent, seems to be able to handle a pretty good variety of tunes. Seems easy to work with.
Cons: May be too ‘theater’ for INXS. His first original song was about unicorns and rainbows and castles in the sky and his second one was a weepy piano ballad, neither of which seemed to impress INXS. Doesn’t seem to have any kind of vision for INXS’ future, and that combined with his very non-INXS originals probably means he won’t fit in well artistically. His attempts at singing INXS during the radio shows were pretty bad, IMO.

I just can’t see them picking MiG at this point, bottom three or no.

Marty
Pros: Charisma, stage presence. He seems to have the strongest vision for INXS’ future and seems most likely to bring something new to the mix. Knows how to write a catchy tune. Somewhat limited voice, but I think he could handle most of the back catalog fairly well. Has a true rock star vibe going for him. Experience from his time with the Lovehammers is a plus. He has said that he is willing to meet INXS half-way creatively.
Cons: Seems a bit too cocky about his intended direction for INXS. Sounds to me (and apparently also to INXS) that he wants to run the whole show. Can he keep his voice under control enough to sing something like “Never Tear Us Apart” with sensitivity instead of seething fury? Might be too Nu-Grunge for INXS.

If INXS wants to be bold and truly move in a new direction, Marty would seem to be the man for the job.

JD
Pros: Charisma and stage presence. Also knows how to write a catchy tune - or at least how to contribute to the writing of a catchy tune. No denying that he’s been one of the most interesting characters throughout the competition. He could probably handle the back catalog in his sleep.
Cons: He seems to want to keep INXS the way that he remembered them instead of moving them forward. As INXS said, can they trust him to keep a level head and not blow up in their faces? Seems emotionally needy.

If INXS wants to try to recapture some of the Micheal Hutchence vibe and get an easily marketable sound, JD might be the guy.

Suzie
Pros: Best singer in the competition. INXS loved her studio rendition of “Us”. She’s been consistently good and improving as the show goes on, and she has sounded really good singing the back catalog so far. A female lead singer would definitely avoid any Michael Hutchence comparisons.
Cons: Stage presence and charisma have been getting better, but still not near the levels that Marty and JD display. Her original also didn’t seem very INXSy. She’s pretty much said that she would not try to change anything about INXS, so she would seem to be contributing almost exclusively as a singer and not a songwriter.

If the guys want to retain their creative control and have a great singer at their disposal, Suzie might be the best choice.

Yeah, I would go with JD or Suzie at this point. Of course, I would have kept Deanna or Ty around to this point if possible, 'cos I think Marty would be a pain to work with. Screamy McScream.

MiG’s “Paint It Black” ain’t doing it for me.

Yeah…to me, MiG’s set was the low point of the night. Suzie got things off to a good start and JD and Marty kept it up, but MiG trying to act “dark”…well, it came off as MiG trying to act “dark.” I don’t believe that he really delivered the emotion on that song. If there’s any justice in the world, MiG ends up in bottom three and INXS sends him home, leaving Marty, JD, and Suzie for the finale. Hear that, God? Here’s your chance to prove that there is justice in the world!

After MiG’s performance, you may be right.

It would be interetsing to see MiG dumped, having never been in the bottom three, while Suzie survives.

The tv was out of my sight during the beginning of MiG’s “dark” Paint It Black and let me just say - if you had told me that was Clay Aiken singing, I might have bought it.

Suzie was the best last night.

As usual. Go, Suzie!

I’m gonna be out tonight, and my VCR is on the blink – could someone post the results (spoilered), pls? TIA.

God help me, I enjoyed JD’s set last night. As much as I detest him, I must admit “Pretty Vegas” is a mighty catchy tune, and that his “Money” was good as well. Over the past few weeks, my allegiance has switched from MiG to Marty. That lame-o song MiG did at the piano actually embarassed me, and I had to turn away from the television. It was terribly earnest and sounded like a Christian ballad.

I think “Trees” is a great pop song, as well, and it was cool to see people in the audience singing along.

One of my friends here is a music lover with an almost encyclopediac knowledge of musical history, eclectic tastes, and an extensive collection of music. Usually he’s spot on when evaluating new bands or singers; he can pretty well determine their primary influences, their level of experience, whether the emotion that they convey is genuine or affected, skill levels, etc. Now, he’s not a professional music critic or anything, but for a layman, he’s the next best thing, IMO. I decided to show him two or three videos of each of the remaining singers to get his opinion. He hasn’t watched the show, though he knows the premise and he is familiar with INXS’s music and history. Here are his impressions:

On Marty:
(after watching Mr. Brightside) “Seems pretty decent but maybe a little uncomfortable without electric guitars and drums around him. He looks like he’s about to boil over into a rage, but on this song I think it works. His voice seems rough, like maybe he smokes a lot, but it does give the vocals some ‘edge.’ I would think that he would be more comfortable in something a little more like grunge rock.”
(After watching Don’t Change) “Don’t Change was one of my favorite INXS songs from their early years. He seems to be really straining his voice at times, and if I were INXS I’d worry about that a little bit. He still seems ready to boil over, and on this particular song it isn’t working as well. Makes me really miss Michael Hutchence. That guy was underrated, in my opinion.”
(After watching Trees) “Is this his original? I wouldn’t have expected something quite so pop radio friendly out of him, with his seething rage underlying his other performances. He still has it here and there, though. I keep expecting him to start screaming and slashing himself with razors while he’s singing. The song is catchy but to me it just sounds like a million other songs out there right now. There are some local bands here (in Minnesota) that have come up with comparable stuff, and they’re going nowhere fast. It’s kind of a throwaway tune on its own. Still, if he only had a very short time to come up with it, it’s pretty good.”

On MiG:
(After watching Oh Baby I Love Your Way) “He seems very confident and polished. He has a better vocal potential than Marty, but I think he lets his voice flit around too much for my taste. Has INXS ever done piano ballads? Kind of an odd song selection for this show, I think.”
(After watching Do or Die) “Hmm…the whole “castles in the sky” thing throws a red flag up for me. Too many cliches. In a way, that maybe suits him, though. Is he gay? Not saying that disrespectfully, but only that he is very comfortable with his feminine side, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he was gay. I’m not crazy about this song, though.”
(After listening to MiG sing some INXS from the live radio show) “Ugh! Keep him away from INXS songs. Horrible. That’s American Idol reject quality. No thanks. Turn it off!”

On Suzie:
(After watching Start Me Up) “She sounds good. Best voice so far. Weird to hear this sung by a female, since there is a lot of testosterone imbedded in those lyrics. I kind of like her version; she has a good set of pipes.”
(After watching Soul Life) “It’s a fairly decent song, though she also falls into the excessive cliche trap with the lyrics a bit. Again she sings it very well. I would think that INXS probably wanted to hear something that would indicate how the singer would write or contribute to the writing of INXS songs, and this seems an odd way to go. Doesn’t quite mesh with INXS’ style, I think.”
(After watching Bitter Tears) “I actually like her version quite a bit. I like her cover of Bitter Tears better than Marty’s Don’t Change because she brings a greater range and quality of vocals to the song. It allows her to express a variety of emotions that I think Marty might have difficulty with because of his constantly angry approach.”

On JD:
(After watching Pretty Vegas and Money back to back.) “The first song reminds me of Listen Like Thieves era INXS. I think he got the idea right, made his original sound like something INXS would do. (After being informed that the basic track was an unfinished INXS track for the new album: “Well, that certainly helps, doesn’t it?”) He did a good job with Money as well. He seems to have everything a little too scripted as far as his between-song patter and his onstage antics. He could be a little more natural up there and still do well.”

(After watching Mystify) “He can definitely handle this song well. It could help him out in the long run, as far as influencing INXS’ decision.”

My thoughts:

First off I have to repeat myself again: “Why is this show not more popular than American Idol???”. Is the general viewing public insane? Just about anyone of the original 15 have at least twice as much talent as any loser that has won American Idol. Can anbody that has ever won American Idol even play an instrument? Letalobe write music?

The final 4 are all awesome singers, but if you want a front man (or person) for INXS, as Caroline would say “It’s a no brainer…”. It’s either JD or Suzie.

Marty: he could be the lead singer for any kind of grunge cover band, or lead singer for any one of the generic sounding rock bands of there now (Killers, Simple Plan, etc.). But I just can’t see him belting out INXS tunes. His original song is a perfect example, INXS said they could hear that song playing on the radio today, but I’m sure they wouldn’t include that song on a future INXS album.

Mig: He just seems to much like a stage singer (a lot like Ty, in more ways than 1 if yous ask me  ). His “dark” version of paint it black reminded me of something that could have been on a 80’s soundtrack (reminded me of “I Need a Hero” from Bonnie Tyler). He’s just too “soft” to be the singer for INXS.

Suzie: Great voice, I don’t have much to say here. I think she would be a very good lead singer for INXS, but that’s about it. I’m not sure if she has the talent to contribute that much to writing music and lyrics for any future INXS songs. Like Mig and Marty’s originals, you just wouldn’t hear it on a future INXS album.

JD: My main man! Yeah he came across as a Dick early on, but it was a competition and he was playing it as one. There were some fairly decent singers that could have ended up in final 4 if they “played the game” like JD had, instead they are gone. He’s out of “Playing the Game” mode now, and is just kicking ass. Yes INXS wrote the music to “Pretty Vegas”, but JD wrote the words. This could easily be INXS’ first top 40 hit on their new album. I don’t think you’ll see “Stop Go” being released anytime soon! From the get go JD has been re-arranging his songs and they have been spot-on everytime. He’s got the skills to pay the bills.

I personally think (and I am by no means a musician) that JD is the perfect fit for a replacement for INXS. Followed by Suzie. If Mig or Marty are chosen I can’t see INXS’ comeback being any where near as succsessful as it could have been.

So? Who got booted?

open Spoilers Past This Post

Bottom 3:

MiG
JD
Suzie

Eliminated: Suzie

Finalists:

Marty
MiG
JD

Well, except for his trip-hop reimagining of “We Are The Champions” which shocked the house band with its crumminess. But, indeed, J.D. has shown an admirable sense of adventurousness, and has usually delivered the goods.

JD has had the best performances lately, which is unfortunate, because he’s an ass who is now pretending to be a reformed ass. He’s had a resurgence though, no doubt.

MiG has consistently done “B+” work, keeping him out of the bottom three because enough others have faltered in any given week.

Joridis was so-so, then rose to astronomical heights with her “A+” work, The Man Who Sold the World. Then, she sung an abysmal Dream On, which killed her self-confidence. The Man Who Sold the World, Part II (aka Imagine) wasn’t enough to save her, and she slid out of the race just as Suzie was getting hot.

Suzie was dragging along the bottom, then rose from the ashes with her “A+” work, Start Me Up and Bohemian Rhapsody, to take over Jordis’ spot in the limelight. Then, she fell to earth with her original music, and got the boot.

Looks like JD is the on the new hot streak now, and INXS really loves his “A-” work lately. Pretty Vegas and Money are “A” work, but he didn’t write the music for Pretty Vegas, and his Suspicious Minds, Come As You Are, and Mystify kinda sucked.

The problem for JD and MiG is that Marty has been doing “A” work pretty consistently since Mr. Brightside, and the job should be his.

However, JD creates publicity and generates the most “heat” out of all of them, even though his performance talent, on the whole, seems less than Marty and MiG. If they pick JD, this is why. JD is probably simultaneously the most loved and hated rocker, and that stirring of the pot is just what INXS might be looking for.

Nooooooo! Not Suzie!

I realize she brings little to the table in terms of songwriting, etc., and they seemed concerned about her ability to handle publicity – but damn, I love that girl’s voice.

:frowning:

Sigh. Gotta decide who to root for next me. God help me, I think it might be Marty.
