Whoa – songwriting.
This could be interesting.
Whoa – songwriting.
This could be interesting.
Ah, a mere diversion.
I’m glad they went ahead on the acoustic show, though.
But Ty, honey – this isn’t what you should be doing with “Maggie May.” It’s the acoustic show.
Marty – who’dathunk? Blondie done good this week!
JD’s turning into a right whiny bitch. I was glad to see Ty’s team having so much fun with the songwriting, but JD really shot his team in the foot by being such a fucking primadonna. Sure, he wrote the better song but it was an effort for the team in that situation.
Looking forward to the show tonight, there’s some scary song selections in there.
OK, here’s my thoughts; I’ll spoiler box 'em just in case:
Jordis: A pretty decent rendition of “Knocking on Heaven’s Door.” Maybe my expectations are set too high for her after “The Man Who Sold the World”, but for some reason this one didn’t stand out to me. Still ought to keep her out of the bottom three.
Jessica: I thought she actually did a really good job with “Torn.” I think that she suffers a bit with her facial expressions as she’s singing, and that’s why INXS doesn’t seem to “get” the emotion that she’s putting into the songs. I was shocked to see that early voting results had her in the bottom three. I voted for her multiple times, just to spite the Jessica haters. Besides, we know she can sing INXS songs well; let’s see if the others can hold up.
Ty: You know, he’s a great singer, but “Maggie May”, I always thought was kind of a heartwrenching song about a May-December romance and breaking up, and he sung it too upbeat and smiling all over the place and I just can’t get that stupid “Stop/Go” song out of my head when I see Ty now.
Suzie: I think Suzie has really blossomed big-time over the past few weeks. I think that she really knocked this one out of the park, especially considering that she didn’t know the song when she first got it. I voted for her multiple times, too, but not out of spite for anyone.
Marty: Well, what can you do when you have a song like that? I think he did OK, he took it to a darker place to be sure, but I just wasn’t digging it. Sorry.
Deanna: I think that she sang her best tonight, but I guess I just don’t really like her voice that much. So I thought it was technically good, but kind of ‘meh’ on the intangible factors.
JD: Just go away, JD.
MiG: Awesome. I think MiG gets the encore performance. And I think this puts MiG in the frontrunner’s spot for top male contender.
I think that Suzie quite honestly might be a stronger candidate for top female than Jordis now, shocking as that might seem to some. If she gets bottom three again I’m going to scream.
One final note: on the Rockstar.MSN boards the JD fans have been talking about how they band together to vote for JD hundreds of times no matter what and that’s how they pulled him out of the bottom three last time. Makes me think it was a bad idea to allow people to vote multiple times for the same singer. Nothing like a bunch of fanatics to ruin things for everyone else. I mean, it’s cool to vote multiple times for someone you think did really well, but to vote hundreds of times for someone no matter what…? I’d rather they limit us all to one vote; maybe give us the option of clicking a checkbox beside our favorites and then submit it all at once, but only once. I’d hate to see more deserving singers get booted because JD’s fans virtually stuff the ballot box each time out.
Well, I didn’t see the Sunday show. I need to find some local fans with VH1, eh?
Jordis: Sounded pretty, but not dark enough for this song, in my opinion. Then again, I liked Dana’s version back in the first episode with the death moan, which seems apropos to me.
Jessica: This was good vocally. She’s usually decent without being spectacular. This performance at least had some cool vocal effects. She seemed to be doing “standard arm expressions” this time, which didn’t help her performance.
I’m afraid she will get sent to the bottom three again, & then not get booted, again, & there’s another performance we don’t get to see from someone else. If she were going to either win fans over or drive the fanatics away, that would be one thing. But I think they’ll just keep power-voting for MiG-Marty-Jordis-J.D., & she’ll be stuck in the bottom 3 for … most of the show’s run, possibly. :sigh:
Ty: Rockin’. Tongue a bit much.
Suzie: I like her gospel style here. My favorite tonight.
Marty: Cool alt-rock voice, but the essential dance-pop bubblegum of the song’s structure still showed, so he couldn’t entirely escape that. He did something neat here. But, it’s still just Marty. He doesn’t have that much range. If I could cut anyone at this point, I think it would be him.
Deanna: Oh, no, it’s the reflexive Deanna arm movements, trying to be contained & low-key! I think she did pretty well vocally. I think she has the strongest & most distracting reflexive tropes in how she moves, though Marty & Jessica could be called on that too. Then again, I think Deanna’s are more unconscious than the others. Not sure if that’s good or bad.
JD: The worst performance tonight, I think. Or “least good,” since no one was really that bad. I think the song’s arrangement had a Zeppelin-esque sound, so maybe the weird whisper thing was an unconscious attempt to sound like Robert Plant? But when he used his–stronger–regular voice for a shout-out, it seemed backwards to me. Why not use your good voice for the song?
MiG: Hey! MiG can play piano! If they hire him, he can play piano, Andrew can play rhythm guitar, & Kirk can focus on sax! The question is, can he play piano & sing at the same time? I’m gonna say no. The piano was good, but his voice was just okay; it seemed strained & pitchy. So how about MiG becomes the keyboard player, & Suzie the lead singer?
I didn’t get online early enough to vote, & I wish I had. Ty & Suzie are my favorites, & I would vote for Jessica, too. Those three are the only contestants left who’ve been in the bottom three, & I really want to see some different people take on INXS.
Jordis: Really good, but I don’t see her as lead singer of INXS.
The blondes: OK, but still don’t see them as lead singer for INXS.
Ty: I loved the Motown-style rendition of Maggie May. He’s a great singer. But, he’s overbearing, personality-wise, and I don’t see him as lead singer for INXS.
JD: Good singer, but something about him puts me off. Again, I don’t see him as lead singer of INXS.
That leaves Marty and Mig.
I thought Mig’s performance was great, plus he’s Australian, so I think he’d be a good fit.
I don’t think Marty’s great, and his stage presence is a bit off, but damn if he doesn’t sound a lot like Michael Hutchence, so he could be a fit.
So, IMHO, it should be Mig or Marty
I am liking Suzie more and more. Ty’s gone Broadway once too often – he’s a wonderful performer, but this isn’t the right gig for him
J.D. Fortune sure likes to talk about J.D. Fortune in the third person, doesn’t J.D. Fortune?
I suppose I’m addicted to this show.
Deanna and Jessica need to be booted of this week together.
JD is such a lying kiss-ass that he doesn’t deserve to win.
Jordis has faded the past two weeks, but she’s still fantastic. She is not lead singer of a band material she’s more of a solo artist.
Ty is a doll, but he’s so high energy. I really want to like him more than I do. I wish there was some heterosexual mystery to him so I can lust after him a bit. Alas, there’s not.
That leaves Mig, Suzie and Marty. I think they would all do well as the front person for INXS. I’m in love with Mig the elf boy and he clinched it this week. I agree that Suzie has blossomed. She is good, but not good enough to be on her own. She’s pretty versatile. And Marty is also good, but not great. He’s interesting, but I’d like to see him do something different. His songs seem to blend together for me–even last week’s accoustic.
I still like JD. The fingers thing is almost Ozzy-ish. I liked what he did last night. But… I liked Marty better. He always seems to be present in the song. Mig was probably the best last night, but I think it was only because he got a song that really suited his voice and personality. He had one accident on the keyboard, but played it off quite well. As for the rest… whatever. I still think Ty should go American Idol. I still think he’s more of a solo singer than a lead singer for INXS.
I am so in love with Marty. And Jordis.
When Jordis sang “The Man Who Sold the World” she had me in tears, as did MiG last night. Side note, why is it spelled MiG? (big G) Wish I could have her rendition on my MP3 player.
Marty grows on me every week. Hubby and I were talking last night. Marty should and shouldn’t win this. He would be better if he was solo.
JD…bah, I’m sick of him.
Suzie…I can’t decide, but I don’t think she’s right for this.
Deanna & Jessica…both need to be gone. They aren’t INXS.
I liked Ty at the beginning, but I don’t see him winning this.
Probably because that’s how the Soviet fighter jet is spelled – don’t know if it’s some kind of acronym in Russian or what.
Ahhhh, I see. Thanks!
I dislike everything about JD. His voice is affected and his personality? Noooo.
Deanna still has my favorite voice, though she doesn’t know how to use it the best.
Suzie seems like a nice person. MiG is really charming, singing or not singing.
Jordis sang Dylan way too pretty. She also sang Clapton way too pretty. But her take on Bowie was spectacular.
What **An Arky ** said.
I’m amused by the image of all three as the “lead singer” of INXS.
Like, all three at once. Sort of a gestalt.
I totally agree with all the above. I know I’m supposed to hate JD because he’s not a good housemate, etc., but I do like to watch him perform.
Suzie has grown on me. I used to hate her. Now she’s really impressing me. I think her main disadvantage is that she just looks so much like a soccer mom. I started liking her a lot more when I didn’t watch her and just listened.
Jordis still wows me with her voice, but I’m not sure how much of a lead singer she is vs. a solo artist. I’m also not sure why she smiles during every song. I used to do this when I had pitch problems (for some reason, smiling kept me from going flat and helped me hit notes that were at the edge of my range), but I always thought that was just me. I doubt Jordis has pitch issues anyway.
I wasn’t as impressed with Jessica as INXS was. I thought her performance wasn’t bad but wasn’t all that great either. I wondered for a long time why I just never liked her. I guess there’s just nothing particularly special about her.
Deanna was okay. The song is great, but she didn’t really add anything special to it. It was just a decent cover.
I loved the three-part encore. Awesome.
I haven’t heard the bottom three perform yet, but I just have to say this:
Fuck JD’s virtual ballot-box stuffing fans. Fuck 'em. There’s no fucking way that he was better than Ty, Suzie, and Jessica this week. No fucking way. I swear, Suzie has been getting better and better, and JD has consistently sucked. Fuck JD.
Man, I’m angrier than I thought.
