Rockstar totally cops out with GTA IV trailer

LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME. The single most hyped game in gaming history, with a debut trailer so incredibly hyped that they took out 30-minute blocks of air time just to show a countdown to it (the trailer, not the actual release). At 6pm EST today, they finally unveil the trailer…

and it’s a bunch of pre-rendered scenes of NYC. No gameplay. No engine. No nothing. Just a bunch of (admittedly) pretty scenery.

LAAAAAAAAAAAAAME!

I agree. The least Rockstar could’ve done is give us a 5 second clip of actual gameplay or a cinematic view of one.
Still, it looks like Liberty City is gonna look a lot more like NYC this time around. And as far as I can tell, it looks to be set in the present day. Those news items should have been released in text, though. I wanted to see something new.

The absolute worst is that they made a big deal out of how this “wasn’t going to be one of those teaser trailers,” and that instead it would actually show something significant and show something to get excited about. Instead, that’s EXACTLY what it was - a teaser that shows nothing of the actual game.

Looks like these weren’t pre-rendered. Cite.
Still, I’m hoping that this is some kind of reverse April Fool’s joke, and the real 10-minute trailer will be coming out on Sunday.

Got the link for the next GTA in my email this morning. Thought you guys might be interested in it:

Different main character it seems but back in Liberty City and it looks so good.

That there is one fiiiiiiine lookin’ bitch!

ok if thats game footage holy crap what a step up.

as usual looking forward to this one big time…any word on multiplayer?

Blah, it’s only going to be on Xbox and PS3. I love me some GTA but I’m not going to buy a new system (especially a $600 one) just for this game. I think my days as a gamer are dwindling.

That’s not pre-rendered.
And that’s New York all right. A little corrupted, like if Dinkins had gotten a second and third term, but that’s New York. I recognized most of the locations.

You know how you can tell it’s game footage? Check the bridge. It’s walled off so you can’t jump off it.
I say it looks fiiiine.

Yeah, if it was prerendered it would look better than that. The shots they had really weren’t anything special and a few of them looked downright weak.

Not that it means that much for how the game will play in the end, but since there was nothing else in the trailer except the graphics its hard to comment on anything else…

Yeah, that trailer, alllll straight from the game. That’s the engine.

And it showed everything people wanted to see.

The main character.
The location.
The engine.
The pretty graphics.

It really has me pumped.

Showed the water and the pedestrians. Look at the peds. They’re different.

But… are you sure that’s the main character?

I’m getting the impression that I used “game engine” in the wrong sense - what I mean is that there’s no shots of actual gameplay and user interface.

But we’ve seen the game engine’s actual gameplay. Table Tennis.
No, really.

Seriously, this was a teaser trailer, and it teased.

Where da weapons at?

Gaming history? Are you high?

Not even almost close. Not by a long shot.

Even currently Halo 3 has it beat, but that’s just currently. Tons of games have been hyped more than this one.

Was that Koyaanisqatsi music?

Am I the only one who wishes they made the main character a little better-looking? That dude looks like a fucking cro-magnon man. The guy has soulful eyes, but a giant nose and a receding hairline. I guess I’ll have to wait for Alan Wake to see a handsome protagonist.

It was Glass for sure, but I don’t think it was Koyaanisqatsi.

If Philip Glass has done a video game soundtrack, it’ll be the coolest step up for game soundtracks since Nine Inch Nails teamed up with Id for Quake.
