Rocky 2 ending question

So, Rocky 2 was on TV the other day. Watching the ending, I wondered about the boxing rules involved:

  • Rocky gets knocked down
  • Rocky gets knocked down again
  • Rocky gets knocked down a third time

Now, I always thought this = TKO.

But, of course, on the last fall, Apollo goes down, too–and doesn’t get up at all. So does this knockout somehow supersede the fact that Rocky went down for the third time?

It depends on what althletic commision/governing body was sanctioning the fight. Not all of them have the “Three Knockdown Rule” and of those that do it isn’t always in effect. Announcers usually mention the rules of the fight before it begins. The rules are also explained to the fighters in the locker rooms before the fight.
