I don’t what the end game is here. He asks some interesting questions, but I get the strong vibe that there’s something goofy going on with the near manic level of posts and the oddball personal items, that at times I think (for whatever reason) that we’re being played by him
.
Funny, I was just looking at his posting history when I saw this thread. I would never have opened my own pit thread, being fairly new and having a fairly high post count myself but… Starting 46 threads in a week strikes me as rather odd, in a way that I can’t quite put my finger on.
Some people like the MB format, some like chat, some like e-mail. It’s not entirely unusual to see some debates with 2 or 3 posters having upwards of 100 posts in it. Although in GQ, it does seem a bit odd.
When I was off work for a while on Doctor’s orders, I had 50 to 100 ppd. And NO, it wasn’t games. If you are interested in a variety of things, it’s very easy to get deeply involved in multiple subjects.
Then again, I’ve had to go out of town for work (before laptop) for1 to 4 weeks or on vacation for a couple of days to a couple of weeks when I posted nothing at all. My ppd is still in the teens.
So, maybe this guy just has a whole lot of intrests and he’s using the computer for entertainment. As long as he doesn’t “be a jerk” what’s the problem? Robotic_Panda? Trek fan? Or strange coincidence?
The folks in the lab are still working on that one, ever since our bespectacled spokesowl misplaced all the research papers and prepared statements, and went with his gut reaction live on national teevee. (He is no longer with us, by the way, and no longer has any authority to speak on behalf of unionized owls anywhere. Kind of what you would call a scab owl at this point.)
Yeah. How dare he!? If we have new people like him joining and posting things the SDMB might actually survive the membership charge!! And then where will we be??!!
Newbies some times get a bit carried away. And yeah, some of his questions are a bit daft. But some of them are quite good too and he isn’t being a jerk. (Though he does need to quit with the title heading thing.)
I don’t see the problem here. This is not how to welcome new subscribers.
It just occured to me what it is that has been bugging me.
While I agree that there’s nothing wrong with “newbie enthusiasm”, (clearly, I suffer from this myself), for the most part, he’s only participating in threads that he started. It would be, IMO, one thing if he was starting a zillion threads and participating in a zillion others, but he’s coming across to me as someone who found a bunch of people willing to answer all his questions, and all for 5 bucks a year.
There was a guy awhile back that maintained something like 30 posts per day (twice this guy’s average) for a few weeks and then suddenly just started an “I’m quitting” thread and hasn’t been back since AFAIK. I think his name was Smiley_Death.
This guy having 15ppd isn’t really that bad if you think about it. I think handy held fast at around 12ppd for several years. I believe Guin and a few other posters are up around 16 or more if I’m not mistaken.
Also remember that this board is fairly calm with very little “chat” type posting (which is a very good thing.) I know of boards with people that have 35,000 posts in a year, which works out to about…95 posts per day.
I say this guy will continue his blitzkrieg for a little while longer and then either calm down or quit altogether. I don’t think the meantime is going to be long enough to really drive any of us nuts.
He seems to adapt, though. His latest thread on diplomatic immunity gave rise to an interesting discussion. I share your irritation but adopt the position ‘wait and see’.
