Actually Libertarian, I love being me to the point I can’t imagine wanting to be anyone else. That is not to say that there are not things I don’t wish that I could change or improve about myself or my life. However, I believe that we are all wonderful, unique creations of a Devine Being and that the universe would be worse off, if any of us had not been created.
Also, for what it is worth I would have posted the OP even if the signficant person had been a family member or friend (or to paraphrase one of my rhetorical heroes Michael Dukakis in his debate with George Bush Sr. " if my wife were killed by a murderer I wouldn’t be in a position to make a rational choice about the appropriateness of captial punishment."). I try never to let emotions cloud curiosity or reason.
a. Do you **think ** that they offered him “pain medication” first? <snip>
There’s no factual answer to this - you’re asking for opinions.
b. Once the executioner commenced cutting how long would he have felt pain? <Snip>
OK, fine, this could be considered a question for GQ.
c. Why such a bloody method?<Snip>
Again, no factual answer here.
d. They played a tape first where he stated his name and where he was from. Do you think he was advised of his fate? If so what would be the incentive to play along? Why not just tell the bastards to go bugger themselves?
Again, asking for opinions and speculation, and not fact.
As you said, it’s not unreasonable to draw conclusions, but conclusions are not fact. I just don’t see why it’s difficult to stick something like that question in IMHO? Just as many people - if not more - read IMHO as GQ, and maybe, just maybe, if you were spreading yourself out a little more, rather than a full assault in one forum, you’d find more willing participants. Just a thought.
Are you daft? The most threads that I’ve started in a day are three of late (somedays only two, and on at least one none). Thus, many of those threads were “bumped” due to replies, not all of which were from me. In addition, I will wager the “average views” on the threads that I have started are in the upper twenty fifth percentile of all posters, at least since this became a pay site. That is to say that on average people are reading those threads implying that they hold at least some minimal degree of interest. However, as always I will endeavor to do better.
I would think that long hours in a hospital seeing massive, terrible wounds would make you more clinical in how you would look at situations like that. The only thing I would criticize about that particular post is that it’s a really sensitive subject, and some people would start to really think, man what did it feel like, and get really upset about it. However, this is a mostly adult board, and I think people can choose not to read posts like that. You gotta admit, his subject said it all.
That said, I was under a bit of a news rock for a few days, and his post was how I discovered the situation even happened. Shitty way to find out, but like I said, I could have stopped reading and gone to CNN.com or something.
Shawn Hannity was encouraging his listeners to view the video and was even linking it to his site (although the link wouldn’t work for me). The point is I don’t see anyone questioning whether he is a “deviant” for doing that (nor should they in my opinion). Look I’m going into nursing to become a CRNA (because at 35 I’m to damm old for medical school). I want to become a CRNA primarily for the money, not compassion. Many of my classmates despise me for openly stating my monetary motivations (even though many have the same motivations, but maintain the PC line of going into the profession to help people). However, I’m the only person I know who actually goes into the nursing home on many of my off days (I work part time as a CNA during the Summer) to visit with the residents, bringing them small presents, and spending time with them. Isn’t that a bit ironic? I’m an openly declaired, sociopathic, bastard primarily going into the profession for the money, and all of my fellow “angles in white” profess love and peace, but actually do the bare mininum it takes to get paid, and get through the program.
I don’t see the rationale for the pile-on. If Cecil can write a column on beheading, what is the hang-up about a GQ on beheading?
So Roland starts a lot of threads (or used to). He’s been warned to tone it down, and has. Now we get a pile-on for asking a question that is too disturbing. And this in a forum with questions about Pan-Fried Semen.
Whatever happened to “nobody forced you to open the thread”?
You bastards, you made me agree with Shodan! I don’t see the point of this at all except maybe asking Roland to start a couple less threads. Frankly, I like his questions, they’re pretty entertaining. To those of you saying he’s inhuman and all that crap, c’mon, grow a spine, he’s just curious!
Roland, one thing that does kinda bug me is how ya keep mentioning every part of your life every time one of your motivations come into question, sheesh, be a bit modest.
Heh, it’s my only vague complaint with you, if you’re gonna talk about your life, you should really discuss it in MPSIMS or IMHO, because sometimes it really just isn’t relevant. It’s kinda like sharing information that nobody really asked about, just a bit awkward.
I do that in anticipation of comments like “you can’t possibly be sincere in asking that question.” I’m trying to show how I came to be curious about a particular issue, and or why I believe it to be important, relevent or otherwise worth discussing when almost no one else does. It’s less of an issue here, but over at Allnurses with almost every question I asked people would respond “you can’t possibly be serious.”
You know the best thing about AllNurses is that it brings together many thousands of professionals in all stages of development ranging from students to experienced PhD’s. In addition, AllNurses unlike many so called “professional” boards also manages to maintain the passion of more open forums, although AllNurses itself is an open, free forum. What’s more there are topics at AllNurses which might be fascinating even to those who have no healthcare interest. Consider an old AllNurses thread with over a hundred replies concerning “true” hospital paranormal/haunting experiences. Another, Allnurses thread involves weird sexual issues that variious nurses have encountered. Best of all since AllNurses uses the vBulletin format, it should be familiar to anyone here who visits. I must add however, that no site matches StraightDope in the quest for arcane knowledge!
Actually, they are still on the front page of GQ because – GASP! – people are replying to them. If anybody’s a slow learner, it’s the people like you who havn’t figured out that most of his posts are actually good questions.
