I always felt sorry for him. He just didn’t seem to get it. But he was well and truly warned and I think the mods were right.
I remember bringing him up at Doper Dinner last summer sometime – as in, “have you seen this loon in GQ?” I was relieved when he seemed to go away of his own accord for several months.
Thanks, guys. I usually just skip over the nutcases – but there was always serious skipping to do when our boy Roland was around.

Heh. It’ll sure be different without him. But it was warranted.
Well, he was doing a bit better for a while. After being Pitted, I think multiple times, and told by Og knows how many people to stop starting so many damn threads when he hardly ever contributed to anyone else’s, and I think being warned by the mods, he went mostly into lurk mode. He may have popped up here and there, but I didn’t really notice him because there weren’t five of his threads on the front page of any one forum. Then after the sex club thread, he started up with his old posting pattern, but instead of being in GQ, it was in IMHO.
From the beginning, though, it’s been the same pattern. He just throws in these random, inappropriate bits about his personal life, the assembled Dopers yell, “Dude, why would you tell us that?” and he rambles on about how his wife is always pissed at him for doing stuff like that, and he’s posted personally identifying information on other boards before and she nearly left him, and blah blah blah blah blah.
Y’know, I was actually kinda hoping for a really good flameout–but I suppose his last “Why me?” was really more indicative of his general character.
Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll have another loon along in no time flat. They’re like grass. It’s nice to have some around, but if the mods don’t mow them every once in a while, they begin to take over.
Okay, maybe the other stuff about facts and nursing homes was bannable, but I’d like to single out the other part.
Someone was banned for offering TMI? I don’t completely follow that.
I believe this would fall under the “Don’t be a jerk” clause. Offering TMI is generally fine, but Roland specialized in offering way, waaaaaay TMI that was inappropriate for the discussions at hand.
Yeah, me too. Kinda disappointed there wasn’t one last completely losing it post. But I guess he was losing it over most of his posts anyway…
I’ve long felt that it was wrong, for various reasons, to set up an “ignore” list, and had never done so; but I finally broke down and personally blacklisted R.D. this past week.
There’s one thing I’ll miss about him, though – the way many of us could riff off him for cheap laughs. R.D.'s thread defending cheating was a case in point. Forget the OP and the guy who started it all; there were some funny posts in that one!
At least this should free up some time for Mr. Deschain to finally get serious about his nursing studies, no?
Good decision, but it seemed a looooong time comin’ … but maybe that was just because he was everywhere.
On the other hand, riling us here on the Dope kept him off the streets …
I’ve seen the abbreviation TMI many times here and realize it has to do with “dirty” or sexual material, but I still haven’t figured out what it stands for. So, I’ve finally decided to ask. And I’ll know I’ll feel stupid when the readily transparent explanation is given.
Too Much Information.
Too Much Information
Too Much Information. Not necessarily just dirty or sexual stuff… can be TMI on menstruating, or pimples, or poo, or other bodily functions. Or just TMI on intimate, mundane personal details… I for one don’t need to know everything about someone else’s life, unless I’m somehow bonded to that person.
Thank you, mods.
Sad, I liked Roland.
Too bad. Oh well. “See ya on the other side” Roland.
I always felt sorry for the tortured, tormented individual that posted as Roland D.
A good first step for him getting his life back together might be to spend more time IRL and less in compu-land. I hope that by banning him, the SDMB mods have started him on the path to better days.
Am I think only one who wanted to grab him by the shoulders and yell, “Just divorce her for God’s sake!”?
