Rolling Stone Best Songs Over 7 Minutes. They miss any?

(Its from 7 years ago)

Here’s some I think they missed:

Ten Years After Going Home
Doors Light my Fire
Allman Brothers Jessica, Dreams
CSN Sweet Judy Blue Eyes
CCR Heard It From the Grapevine
Joe Walsh Life’s Been Good
Led Zep Kashmir, Stairway, How Many More Times
Neil Young Down By The River, Cowgirl In The Sand
Pink Floyd Us and Them, Breath
Traffic Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys

Any others?

Prince - D.M.S.R., It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night
James Brown - The Payback
Husker Du - Reoccurring Dreams
Rush - La Villa Strangiato
U2 - Bad (Live) [from Wide Awake in America ]
The Velvet Underground - Sister Ray

It says 50 Best, so it’s not meant to be all-inclusive, but I’ll add:

Roll Over Beethoven by the Electric Light Orchestra

Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meat Loaf

Rosalita - Bruce Springsteen

There were three other songs over seven minutes from the same album, The Wild, the Innocent, & the E-Street Shuffle: KItty’s Back, New York City Serenade and Incident on 57th Street. All great songs, imo. Love that album.

Here’s a live version of New York City Serenade.

Some more:

My Bloody Valentine - Soon
Bruce Springsteen - Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)
The Stooges - Dirt
The Church - Life Speeds Up
Stevie Wonder - Love’s In Need Of Love Today
Outkast - Spottieottiedopaliscious
Elvis Costello - When I Was Cruel No. 2
Buzzcocks - I Believe
The Coup - Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night
Parliament - Flashlight
Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
Slint - Good Morning, Captain
Public Image Ltd. - Pop Tones

Good one. One of my favorite songs, period. (Although it might be missing because, depending on where you look, its length is anywhere from 6:58-7:01.)

My first thought was Television’s “Marquee Moon.” But I see that Rolling Stone got that one. so, I’ll go with:

Kanye West - Runaway
Stone Roses - Fools Gold
Van Morrison - Madame George
Neu! - Hallogallo
Smashing Pumpkins - For Martha

The Quarrymen - I Want You (She’s So Heavy)

The Who - A Quick One (While He’s Away)

I don’t think there’s any songs on my playlist that are under seven minutes. Just a sampling of what they missed:

The Beatles “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” (7:47)
Billy Joel “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” (7:36)
Deep Purple “Child in Time” (10:15)
The Devin Townsend Project “The Mighty Masturbator” (16:38)
Dream Theater “A Change of Seasons” (23:08)
Edge of Sanity “Crimson” (40:00)
Emerson, Lake & Palmer “Karn Evil 9” (29:32)
Fates Warning “The Ivory Gate of Dreams” (21:25)
Frankie Goes to Hollywood “Welcome to the Pleasuredome” (13:40)
Genesis “In the Cage (Medley: Cinema Show/Slippermen)” from 3 Sides Live (11:52)
Golden Earring “Twilight Zone” (7:55)
Helloween “Keeper of the Seven Keys” (13:37)
Iron Maiden “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” (13:45)
Jethro Tull “Thick as a Brick (part 1)” (22:45)
Kansas “Song for America” (10:03)
King Crimson “21st Century Schizoid Man” (7:20)
Mercyful Fate “Satan’s Fall” (11:21)
Metallica “Master of Puppets” (8:38)
Molly Hatchet “Fall of the Peacemakers” (8:03)
Moonsorrow “Jäästä Syntynyt/Varjojen Virta (Born of Ice/Stream of Shadows)” (30:10)
Motorhead “Just 'Cos You’ve Got the Power” (7:30)
Opeth “Deliverance” (13:36)
Peter Frampton “Do You Feel Like We Do (Live)” (14:17)
Peter Gabriel “Biko” (7:27)
Pink Floyd “Interstellar Overdrive” (9:41)
Porcupine Tree “The Sky Moves Sideways (Alternate Version)” (34:42)
Queen “The Prophet’s Song” (8:20)
Queensryche “Suite Sister Mary” (10:41)
Renaissance “Ashes Are Burning” (11:20)
Sleep “Dopesmoker” (63:31)
Sunn O))) “Ra at Dusk” (14:43)
Transatlantic “The Whirlwind” (77:54)
X-Japan “Art of Life” (29:00)
Yes “Close to the Edge” (18:50)
Justin Timberlake…wtf???

Light My Fire comes in several versions. The album version is just over at 7:05, but the long radio version appears to be 4:40. While I like that song, I don’t think the length adds much, while the End it is necessary. Same with Blue Monday: the 1988 version was just over 4 minutes. I’d consider them both to count because of the album version, but whatever. Looks like they were going with “single best long song by artists.” And Sister Ray has its moments, but Heroin is better.

Off Tool’s Ænima, Eulogy, Pushit, and Third Eye are all long enough. I’d probably vote that first one personally. Plus a bunch more of theirs qualify off other albums. What no “Disgustipated”?

The Damned - Curtain Call – 17:13
Huh, Dead Flag Blues is only 6 minutes, seems longer.
Cortez the Killer - great song, stupid lyrics.

Grateful Dead - Dark Star, Wharf Rat, and many, many others.
Neil Young - Like A Hurricane, Down By The River, Cowgirl In The Sand, and many others.

Thought of a few more:

The Cure “Disintegration” (8:18)
Dire Straits “Money for Nothing” (8:24)
Guns N’ Roses “November Rain” (8:53)
Led Zeppelin “In My Time of Dying” (11:04)
Rush “Xanadu” (11:07)
Steely Dan “Deacon Blues” (7:36)

I assume the lack of Sigur Rós songs is because most of the song names are too hard to type. If I had to choose one, I think I’d personally go for “Sæglópur” over “Untitled 8” and most of Ágætis byrjun.

Epitaph- King Crimson

Phoenix- Wishbone Ash

Sabre Dance - Love Sculpture

And, too many to list from Godspeed You Black Emperor.

“Living for the City” by Stevie Wonder. Wikipedia says it was #105 in Rolling Stone’s list of the best songs of all time.

What about the long version of Billy Idol’s White Wedding?

I always liked it much more than the short version.

Hey Jude.

Well, with the passing of Big Bank Hank, I’d like to throw up a mention of the long version of “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang.

That one’s on the Rolling Stone list.

Svgen-g-englar is on the Rolling Stone list. That along with Olsen Olsen & Ágætis byrjun (the song) are hard to pick a single favorite from myself. More recently: Ára bátur.
