Rolling Stone Best Songs Over 7 Minutes. They miss any?

Just off the top of my head, I’ll nominate:
Pink Floyd’s Dogs - Rolling Stone lists Sheep, but I think Dogs is a better song.
Don McLean American Pie- really surprised this isn’t on the Rolling Stone list. Most people I know consider it a beloved classic.

Siegel-Schwall Band “Hush Hush
All the songs on Soft Machine Third: Facelife, Slightly All the Time, Moon in June, and Out-Bloody-Rageous.
MacDonald and Giles: “Birdman
Pink Floyd: “Echoes” and “Atom Heart Mother.” Floyd’s best songs were all over 7 minutes.

For the obligatory Rolling Stone author bashing, it’s clear by the presence of Oasis on this list that this was either written by a 22-year old intern doing a simple Billboard database sort of “running time” length, or there is a gas leak in the office and a draft was sent by mistake when trying to palm-mash 911 on their Blackberry. Or, Rolling Stone wouldn’t cook these up to generate page views would they? Would they?

Snark finished, I feel better now.

Arlo Guthrie - Alice’s Restaurant Masacree
Blind Faith - Had to Cry Today
CCR - Heard it Through the Grapevine
Jethro Tull - many, but let’s say Thick as a Brick for the obvious
Golden Earring - Radar Love or Twilight Zone
Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well
Rush - the whole 2112 Side 1 bit.

Time Has Come Today by the Chambers Brothers

Intrigued by this notion, I opened iTunes and created a smart playlist of all my favorite songs longer than 7:00. Of the 149 results, here are a few of the interesting ones:

“O Superman,” Laurie Anderson
“Ball and Chain,” Big Brother & the Holding Company
“Cold Sweat,” James Brown
“I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” CCR
“Tunnel of Love,” Dire Straits
“Slow Ride,” Foghat
“Emily,” Joanna Newsom
“Shine on You Crazy Diamond,” Pink Floyd (lots of good ones by them)
“Can’t You Hear Me Knocking,” Rolling Stones
“Marquee Moon,” Television

Of course, Dylan is in a class by himself in this category; I’d add “Visions of Johanna,” “Stuck Inside of Mobile,” “Idiot Wind,” “It’s Alright, Ma,” “Desolation Row,” “Brownsville Girl,” “Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts” …

I thought Poco’s Rose of Cimarron and The Eagles’ Lyin’ Eyes were both at least 7 minutes, but they fall just short (@6:43 and 6:25, respectively).

Weird Al-Genius In France.

Weird Al Yankovic - Albuquerque

Oh man, Tuesday’s Gone is such a magnificent song. It really should be on there.

Bob Marley Exodus comes to mind at 7:40. There are many more from Bob that cross the 7 minute mark but Exodus is a classic.

Miles Davis’ So What clocks in at 9:24, but I guess that’s not really a song.

Also on the list.

never mind, they had Iron Butterfly on the link in the OP

Genesis-Supper’s Ready. Roughly 25 minutes long and considered a masterpiece.

Youtube video with Peter Gabriel

Most of mine have been mentioned already, but:

Allman Brothers - Mountain Jam - 33:48

From Isaac Hayes’ Hot Buttered Soul album:

–“Walk on By” (12:03)
– “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” (18:42)

The Musical Box

Cinema Show (Seconds Out version)

…as runners up

**I Can’t See New York**by Tori Amos

I suppose Sister Ray by the Velvet Underground is a classic of sorts

Ironically, the OP’er at that site is named “Roundabout”, but no mention of that song in the thread (much less the RS list)…

I’m Your Captain/Closer to Home is the most egregrious omission, and they chose the wrong songs for some other performers. Sheep over Echoes is particularly puzzling. I’d go with D’You Know What I Mean over Champagne Supernova too, but I guess it is still fashionable to diss Be Here Now

MacArthur Park (original Richard Harris version).
