I think the poll could have used a choice between “it’s pretty good” and “it measures up with the Stones best work” but it’s very good, so I went ahead gave it the highest rating. I like the Gospel feel; reminds me a bit of “Shine a Light”. It sounds like a song that might have fit right in on Exile on Main Street. Or at least an outtake.
Mick is in fine voice. I mean, he’s never been a vocal virtuoso, but for what he does he sounds as good as he ever has, unlike many other singers his age who are losing their voices.
Lady Gaga is the only thing that elevates this above typical Stones album filler. It’s not a bad song, but it’s not something I’m going to be humming the rest of the day.
Hahaha! I was thinking that Mick looks like he just had an appointment at the Clip & Curl down the street and got the latest in Church Lady hairstyles.
I don’t think combing his hair back like that is doing him any favors. That said, I’m not prepared to speculate on what he’d look like in that video even if he were sticking with the “classic” Ronnie hairstyle.
I like the Stones best when they have a “nastier” sound, or at least when they’re more up-tempo, but I’ll happily say that Mick and Lady Gaga sound great together. Two thumbs-up!
Yeah, like I said, I feel like the poll could have used a choice between ‘pretty good’ and ‘their best work’. I thought it was better than pretty good, and I guess I was feeling generous that day.
It’s my favorite song on the album, and would be the second-best or third-best track if it were on their most recent sequence of decent albums (1978’s Some Girls, 1980’s Emotional Rescue, and 1981’s Tattoo You)…so that helps to make Hackney Diamonds their best album in 42 years (and almost as good as that sequence of three*).
Also, there’s no true “filler” on Hackney Diamonds, IMHO — the least interesting songs on it are a bit better than the worst songs on the three albums I mentioned.
*Well, “almost” is too strong. Better to say it’s in their ballpark, which is more than I can say for any Stones album during the long decades in between.
Feels like a pretty bog standard gospel/blues piece. I like that sort of music so, I suppose, no complaint there but I wouldn’t say that it comes across as something special.
I really enjoyed it. I love Mick and Lady Gaga together.
As an aside, I think I see an actor in the audience. I don’t know his name but I have seen him in a lot of roles. You can see him pretty clearly at 1:22, right under Mick’s elbow. Anyone?
