Rome 07/01/21 (spoilers)

So what’s going to become of Vorenus? We know what happens to Octavian in the long run? When’s Octavia gonna start putting the moves on Marc Anthony? I’m hoping we’ll get to see a little more of Calpurnia (she really came into her own after Caeser dies). I’m also hoping we get to see more of Marc Anthony  , they cheated us the last episode.

I’ll spoiler this, but it’s only from the ons-screen guide:

Not only do we get to see more of Marc Anthony, we get to see Cleopatra again, as she comes for a visit, with Pullo’s son, I presume.

Well, now we know what more the gods can do to Vorenus.

Politics are interesting, but where’s the casual nudity? I want to see some skin, dammit!

Vorenus’s kids are still alive! Great episode. So do we switch over to Octavian 2.0 next week, right?

I think we saw the new Octavian in the previews for 1/28.

And…

Vorenus’ family is still alive!

“I am a son of Hades. I fuck Concordia in her ass.”

You’ve come a long way, Vorenus.

Great twist at the end, showing Vorenus’ children in the ox cart. Am so glad to see this show back-I love historical pieces like this; I too would like to see a bit more nudity (where was it anyway, after they advertised it?! Or was it so brief that I missed it? LOL).

Max Pirkis has rocked this show! As Octavius grows into Augustus Caesar, probably by next week, it was possibly his last show tonight, and I’ll definitely miss him in the cast.

Interesting how the Lady Concord was worshipped - when Christianity took hold, it would seem that worship evolved to Mary.

Calling Bill Gates! A better use for all your billions would be to finance a third season of Rome.

Any lip readers here? What, exactly, did Mark Antony say to Cleopatra? I know the general tenor of the suggestion. I want to know the specifics!

Fucking great episode. Damn what a show. Not letting Pirkis continue as Octavian is
a travesty. He’s been pulling off the transformation wonderfully. Did anyone catch what Atia said to Cleopatra as the latter was leaving? Something about “trollop?”

I was amused that Vorenus achieved agreement by committing a major sacrilege against Concordia (and also declaring himself a son of Hades).

I believe it was “Die screaming you pig born trollop.”

Antony’s was harder I think he bascially said something about her letting him kiss her soft lips.

I thank you guys for catching that it was the children in the cart. I completely did not recognize them.

Strange episode. I’m not sure I liked it as much as I usually do, but I’ll have to re-watch it later this week and see. It was almost as if it had been written by James Mitchener or someone like that.

I only say Niobe’s sister, the youngest daughter and the son in the cart. Was the older daughter there, too?

I’m pretty sure all the children were in the cart.

I wasn’t surprised that they were still alive for two reasons. First, Erastes Foreman is too much of a businessman to just rape and kill them for revenge; selling them into slavery makes much more sense. Second, I think Vorenus will ultimately be redeemed, and the only thing that could do that would be his children.

I wonder if there wasn’t some foreshadowing in the dialog between Pullo and Vorenus that went something like:

Pullo: You can’t say you’re the son of Hades. The gods won’t like it.
Vorenus: What else can they do to me?
Pullo: I don’t know, but something bad.

Well, since his children aren’t dead, there’s quite a bit the gods can still do to Vorenus.

Anyone interested in conversion rates, as I was, can see them here. I assume we’re still in the timeframe when one dinarius = 4 sestertii.

That was a good bit. The look on the gangstas’ faces showed that they got it: “If he’s crazy enough to smash a god, what’s he gonna do if I piss him off?”.

Wait a minute, wait a minute. Wasn’t that cart part of Octavian’s caravan? Are you saying that the kids are now slaves owned by Octavian? I didn’t recognize the kids either. (They seemed like adults to me.) Except for the very last one peering through the cage. I thought it was Pullo’s son, not Vorenus’s.

(Incidentally, I don’t think Mary has ever been worshipped. Only venerated.)

I don’t think so. I thought they were just passing each other. I don’t see why Octavian would be hauling around “fresh” slaves like that. Looked like they were being sent somewhere.

No it was Niobe’s son. The adult you recognized was Niobe’s sister. I saw the youngest daughter, but not the older one.

I liked that too. Nice example of early use of religion to control people. I’m assuming that’s how we were supposed to see it.

John Mace – I agree (Michener) – not much nuance, very straightforward. The writers set up future conflicts, and there wasn’t much humor.

I forgot to add in that post that the part that made me think of that was when Pullo got Marc Anthony to come to Vorenus’ house and get him out of his funk. That would be classic Michener-- getting the real characters to interfere significantly in the lives of the fictional ones. Not bad for light entertainment, but a little  most of the time.
