Rome 07/01/21 (spoilers)

I agree. Vorenus has come to believe that he is evil.

One interesting tie-in for the impending Jesus, if Jesus qua historical figure and Jewish prophet/healer is actually brought into the script, would be via Vorenus. He could be the centurion who asks for healing for his child.

All the elements are in place to make it feasible. Levi will be returing to Rome as a tax collector. Vorenus’s children are still alive, and one of them could easily come down with a disease in their filfthy conditions. (That’s not to say that the Aventine is sanitary.) Vorenus in his present duties will now be exposed to Timon much more often, and may even meet Levi. Then all the seeds are sown for a quick jaunt down to Jerusalem. (Or maybe even a restationing.)

…that’s a ridiculous condensing of the timeline though.

Yeah, but isn’t that what’s coming down the pipe? Didn’t someone say that Octavian will be middle age or something next week?

Yeah, but we’re still talking 70 years between the assassination of Julius and the advent of Christ’s ministry. Jesus didn’t get into the healing biz until he was 35 or so, remember?

True. But I think they take liberties with the timeline, don’t they? Haven’t people mentioned that all along? And what about Levi? If it’s just some guy from Jerusalem who happens to be named Levi, and who happens to observe kosher, and who happens to be suspicious of the Pharisees, and who happens to hate Rome, and who happens to be engaged in commerce, then the coincidences are rather conspicuous.

They aren’t going to take that many liberties with the timeline. Compressing a 6 year range war into a 2 hour movie (Tombstone) is one thing, having Vorenus still alive in AD33 is pushing it, and there are too many historical pedants out there ( Yo! ) who would call them on it.

Yeah, I don’t mind a little timeline fudging for a couple reasons. . .

  1. it makes the whole story more interesting to introduce Jesus. I really never saw that coming after watching season 1.

  2. I’m not a tremendous student of history. How “locked in” are the official timelines anyway?

A little wiki-skimming indicates there’s debate on his existence at all, not to mention trying to nail down a time line.

I always understood, he might be some sort of amalgam, so I’m not that worried that they would introduce a jesusish dude into the story.
