Rome, season 2 premiere 07/01/14 (spoilers)

The 2nd (& final :frowning: ) season starts tonight. So how much time will pass in season 2? If they plan on showing Octavian becoming Caeser Augustus then that’s about 14 years, right? Who’s replacing Max Pirkis as Octavian (or is he actually going to keep playing him for the rest of the season  ).

Roman culture WTF moment; what’s with the symbolic breastfeeding of Caeser and why didn’t Calpurnia do it?

A million cheers for Calpurnia and her hearty saliva!

(I’m also curious about the breastmilk scene).

Wait wait, what’s this about this being the final season?!

Yeah, Calpurnia was awesome (of course we won’t see much more of her). Given the title I thought we see more of Timon.

I love this show and lines like this, “Fetch that German slut from the kitchen.”

By the way, if you have HBO On Demand, you might want to check out the extras available for this show. One of them explains more about

the Aventine Mafia and it’s position in Roman society. I believe Lucius Vorenus is killing the head of that group at the end of this episode, and will take over as godfather in the next one.

Another good line: “You too, Mother?”

I’ve never guessed right about what’s going to happen on Rome (or any other show), but I’m guessing that Erastes was telling the truth, or a close proximity of it.

I love Max Pirkis in this role. I think he could keep playing the part. I’ve known guys who stayed fresh-faced into their 30’s.

Rome is very expensive to produce (though the cost should go down after season 1 since they already have costumes and sets) :dubious: . HBO was only willing to renew it for one more season. Given the detail that goes into planning this show I hope the producer knew season 2 would be the last season when they planned the arc.

Three cheers for Rome being back, even if it is the last season.

Watching Mark Anthony declare that he wasn’t getting out of bed until he f***ed something made me think of the “it’s good to be King” line

Poor Vorenus. That guy cannot get a break. The scene where Pullo was washing his face was very touching. At least they have each other, eh? And Pullo has his creepy ex-slave wife situation, which I feel sure is going to bite him in the ass in the future.

Cancelling it would be a huge mistake. All my profs (in the Classics dept.) rave about it. One of my teachers was an advisor for Empire and goes on and on about Rome (and its superiority to Empire), to the point of doing an honors seminar on it last quarter (I took it, of course).

I really hope they decide to stick with it.

Just what the fuck is up with Eirene? Either she’s fucked up from a lifetime of slavery or she’s planning to do something horrible when he least expects it. I’m guessing it’s both.

What an outstanding show. A little of the pain of Deadwood being over has dissipated.

To all of you experts on the history of the era. How true are all of the machinations of Marc Antony and Octavian and what is conjecture?

I came in here to say “Et tu, mother?”, but you beat me to the punch…

I think it’s the fucked up from a lifetime of slavery part.

I’ve been wondering about her for a year though, so I paid close attention to her expressions in the repeat of the S1 finale and in tonight’s ep. I think she’s okay with Pullo for now.

Besides, how long did she know the guy Pullo killed? She wasn’t from there, was she? So she must have just met him. Wasn’t like they were childhood sweethearts.

He’s to be replaced by Simon Woods after the third episode.

My favorit line:
“Claudio isn’t coming.”

So, are Pullo’s kids really dead or was Erastus just bullshitting him because he knew he was dead no matter what? I have to say, if he was telling the truth, a simple beheading was way too kind.

Curious that they chose not to show the funeral speeches. Maybe they thought it would be too reminiscient of Shakespeare.

I liked how Octavian was shown as cool and calculating, measuring all the angles, even when his life was most in jeopardy. That kid is going to go places.

I imagine they’ll jump forward after the Trimverate gets established. No reason to slog through ten years of that. I’m guessing they want to end with Octavian gaining absolute power and crushing Antony. I wonder if we’ll seem get the title of “Augustus” in the finale.

Lots of people standing around in dark clothes glaring at each other (Upstairs) and doing earthy, decisive things with few words (Downstairs). I didn’t recognize Erastes at first because I didn’t notice the pimp chain, but I agree that, recognizing he was a dead man (and facing having to recruit all those new gangsters) he said the single thing that would get Vorenus to kill him instantly. Hope, hope, hope it’s not true!

Lots to absorb, and lots of research to do on Roman funeral rites. And if a man got a wetnurse to touch his mouth, what did a dead woman get? Never mind…

Who was the guy whose throat was cut by Antony? This was right after Brutus said they were friends. Antony was like, “Yeah, great,” then turned and killed someone. I feel like I should know who that was, but maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention at that moment.
