Rome: Total War - weird speech from general

Several times before battle, a general of mine has made the following speech:

Hello. Today we are gathered here to do battle. Regretable, isn’t it, but sometimes, you know, life is like that. You have to do something that you don’t want to do, just because someone is telling you to do it. I didn’t want to be here myself, but then my mother told me that I’d better make a reasonable show of it all, so here we go then…

I’m guessing it’s either because he’s a boring speaker or because he’s lily-livered; those are strange traits for a military genius to have.

I’m trying to cure him of the “lily-livered” part by having him lead cavalry charges when it’s safe. So far it doesn’t seem to be working. Do I need to make him take more risks?

That speech cracks me up every time without fail. Though most often I don’t bother listening to the speeches.
