He won’t. But the question is why anyone thinks he would have anything to do with it. Most the party disliked him, he was the subject of some very vitriolic criticism from inside the party and was nominated with maximum reluctance, and now that he’s lost, they accept none of the blame and say it’s all his fault. He doesn’t hold elected office and he’s unlikely to run again, and there’s no chance he’d be part of a future Republican campaign or administration. They have no use for him, he has no use for them. The same goes for Bush and they don’t have too much use for McCain either. Gore retired from politics after 2000 and hasn’t had much to do with the Democratic Party; An Inconvenient Truth was something he did to advocate for a cause he believes in, not for the party.
To name another example, Democrats didn’t have much use for Joe Lieberman after 2000 - nor he them, after his 2004 campaign landed with a thud. Cheney and Rice are still respected in some Republican circles but I don’t think that’s a majority opinion. I haven’t seen a lot of candidates seeking their advice or endorsement or campaign appearances since 2008.
Didn’t Cheney host a big fundraiser for Romney?
Yes, there was one. Not a public campaign event, just a private event at what I presume was a secret lair underneath a volcano. Compare that to Clinton’s campaigning for Obama.
I keep hoping Romney would take a position like Chairman of the Federal Reserve or even Treasury Secretary.
I didn’t agree with Romney on a lot of issues but he knows capital trading and investments. He’s got a natural talent for it. Properly supervised, he could really help our country’s economy.
I think I’d prefer to keep our gold at Fort Knox. Not a slam on the Cayman Islands, or anything…
It would never be offered to him.
You might have missed it, but earlier this November, the American people indicated that they want to be governed by Democrats and, in fact, did not want to be governed by Mitch Romney.
Chairman of the Federal Reserve isn’t political. I don’t recall Greenspan taking any political positions. But wasn’t he considered a Rep? Whoever takes the position walks away from politics. At least, they are supposed to.
You know, I might spend $50k a plate to go to the secret super villain lair under the volcano - even if I didn’t vote for Mitt.
(Well, no I wouldn’t, I have better things to do with $50k right now than seeing a super villain lair…but if I had $50k to burn, I might as well burn it in Dick Cheney’s volcano).
I think I would expect more specific education in economics besides an MBA from Harvard in my Fed Chairman. Don’t they traditionally have a PhD in economics? I don’t think that “running a large company” should be the only or most important requirement for that role.
Doesn’t matter. What matters is that Obama and Romney might have just a few differences of opinion on fiscal and monetary policy, and it wouldn’t make sense for Obama to turn around and appoint Romney after voters sided with Obama’s viewpoint over Romney’s.
It would make sense to Obama’s top donors lol. That’s why people call it a non-political post, it’s by appointment (like the supreme court is non-politcal lol). Important posts like these have traditionally been given to people far right of the population and the candidate(their public face anyway) to appease the plutocrats (see Geithner, Bernanke ect) .
Oh, like the speeches that McCain and Bush gave this year?
Old pols get speeches when the candidate thinks it will help, not out of the goodness of his heart. And most of the time the speakers don’t bring chairs.
They are not supposed to be, but Greenspan did keep interest rates low for too long possibly to help Bush in 2004. But the stuff Romney did has nothing at all to do with what a Fed Chairman or a Treasury Secretary does. I can just see him bragging about his success in making money for the government as the unemployment rates goes to 20%.
 Why would you put a vulture capitalist in charge of the Fed? “Gee, while he’s robbing us blind, at least we know he’s really good at it!”
Yeah, I wouldn’t trust him anywhere near the government & money. If he could figure out how to collapse the country at a profit, he would do so and laugh all the way to the bank.
That’s fucked up!
Y’know, on thinking about it, you’re right. That’s the sort of thing a bachelor fresh out of college, with no close family or friends, would do. But Romney has at least a wife and three sons, and probably other relatives. And he certainly has plenty of social connections. Surely, he must have gotten at least a couple of invitations-- Is he just turning his back on them?
Covered it up. Got in the door, first thing, somebody asks “Hey, how’s it going?” and Mitt just stabbed and stabbed and stabbed…
