Romney has little interest in helping the Republican party

It’s too bad we didnt get a man of such great character as our next president…

Eh, he was the front-guy during the GOP’s most recent electoral loss. I suspect he’s not interested in helping them change the party because he knows they don’t particularly want his help. Its hardly a “character” issue, one way or the other.

Meh. I don’t remember Al Gore doing much for the Democratic Party after he lost either.

IOW, “65 year old retires.”

Huh? Wikipedia says otherwise. I’m sure Romney won’t be opening the 2016 Republican convention and no candidate is going to want Romney’s endorsement.

Romney will help the Republicans with money, but won’t be seen again in campaigns. Romney will be as invisible in national campaigns as Michael Dukakis.

Gore in 2004:

…After announcing he would not run in the 2004 U.S. presidential election, Gore endorsed Vermont governor Howard Dean in December 2003, weeks before the first primary of the election cycle…

Later, in March 2004, Gore endorsed John Kerry and gave Kerry $6 million in funds left over from his own unsuccessful 2000 bid. Gore also opened the 2004 Democratic National Convention…

I think he’s going through depression. You spend six years of your life running for president, scuttling all of your beliefs to get nominated in the process, and get rejected- that’s to be expected. He got his Thanksgiving dinner from Boston Market for goodness sakes- that should be a clue.

I hope he is, and more. There needs to be some quid pro quo for lying to the American people.

Of course Mitt is depressed. He finally found something that money cannot buy.

Although a 65 year old who was ready to take on one of the hardest jobs in the world (reports are that most presidents have a 70+ hour workweek), probably shouldn’t be retiring, for his own health and sanity.

He isn’t obligated to the Republican party, but if he wanted to be president for reasons other than ego, there are still plenty of ways to serve. Clinton, Gore and Carter have all found excellent ways to serve and stay busy. I think its easier as an ex-President than as a failed presidential candidate, but he has wealth and power and contacts - I hope he finds a way to keep himself busy in a way that makes a difference in the world.

The problem is he already did that.

To be fair to Romney, he doesn’t really owe much to the Republican party. They spent the entire primary season looking for a not-Romney to run against Obama and probably fatally damaged his campaign by branding him as a Bain capitalist, out of touch lying plutocrat. (Granted, this might have been one of those rare moments of Republican insight, but I can see Romney being peeved.)

In fact, this is one of the true paradoxes of the last election – the Republicans were terminally unenthusiastic about Romney, yet at the same time were completely flabbergasted and distraught when he lost.

The Republican Party wasn’t crazy about him in the first place and a lot of Republicans seem to feel the main reason they lost was Romney, and they have showed no interest in any kind of help Romney could give them. So it’s not a surprise if the feeling is mutual.

THIS.

Like I said about the whole “Obama gave too many gifts for me to win” bit - pure hypocrisy. He offered his own ‘gifts’, which were aimed at the wealthy alone. They were rejected by the American people, and he was bitter about it.

I’ve seen a similar comment from many of the vocal Republicans as to why they lost. Never mind they failed to comprehend things like minority votes as important. It’s always better for the workman to blame the tools than the work product. Or so they believe.

I’m no fan of Romney, but this complaint is pretty weak sauce. The man poured many years of his life into a goal, came incredibly close to it, and then missed.

You mean apart from commissioning and touring around the world with “An Inconvienient Truth” and singlehandedly putting the issue of climate change back on the public agenda?

As for the OP; I’m no fan of Romney, but give the man a break and some time to get over it.
The article is mean, and virtually fact-free.

I don’t see why Romney should. They’ve been pretty vicious to him since before the election.

Christie said that the real leadership of the Republican party is the Republican Governors. They are the only part that added members during the last election. National level Republicans need to realize this.

Goodness gracious, what an hero: he sent out not one, but two press releases!

Being tapped to give a convention opening speech is a treat the party gives a pol (it gives visibility, the coin of the realm), not the other way around. It certainly isn’t evidence that Gore was working very sedulously on behalf of the party.

Giving $6 mil is legit assistance, I will grant that.

Personally, I think it’s always a sign of great character to refuse to help the Republican party. Nonetheless, it’s been less than a month since the election, it’s the holidays, and he’s not President. What the hell should he be doing?

Anne Romney never sounded thrilled about this election, but I have little doubt that she was mentally prepared to be First Lady. She now has nothing to be prepared for, and may be simultaneously experiencing relief and disappointment. She’s on an emotional roller coaster, and her husband is acting weird. Why shouldn’t she be crying? (If she is.)

It’s a bit much to expect Romney to be doing anything substantive so soon after losing the election. But it does reflect the individualistic, “I got mine, never mind you” ethos I get from the Republican Party, exemplified in Chris Christie’s keynote speech at the RNC that was more about setting himself up for 2016 than promoting the current candidate. In fact, the whole convention felt like an uninspired collection of disparate causes, each promoting itself with no unifying connection between them. I won’t be surprised if Romney never has much to do with the party again, even after he recovers from the loss. The GOP was simply his platform to the presidency, and now that the office is out of his reach, he has no more use for the party, the same way he has no more use for a business he’s bought after it’s been raped and pillaged for all its worth.
