Romney may be Secretary of State

John Bolton and Newt Gingrich were probably too hardline.

I wonder how much of this consideration is due to the very real possibility that Trump’s preferred choices wouldn’t make it through a confirmation hearing. I’ve heard that Giuliani has been paid money to lobby on behalf of foreign governments. Maybe that sort of entanglement is viewed as too toxic, even for a Republican senate.

Or, this meeting is just an overture to make nice with the Republican mainstream. Nothing will come of it, but in Trump’s mind a golf outing constitutes compromise with his critics.

Trump isn’t gonna pick Romney for anything, unless he’s told to do so.

Romney is far more handsome & since he was a candidate for president, the American people may look more to Romney than Trump (besides the alt-right).

If anything, there’s probably more to this than we’re being told.

Just off names…President Romney sounds more legitimate.

My guess would be somewhere between this, and the previous suggestions that he’s just toying with Romney out of vindictiveness.

Either way, the thread title should be “Romney will NOT be secretary of State”. But then again, I’ve been surprised by a lot of things these past few months. The thing about a loose cannon is, you can be sure it will bounce its way downhill in the long term and eventually plunge overboard after smashing a lot of stuff, but there’s no telling what it will do on its way.

Except I doubt Christie annoyed Trump that much since Christie’s only real criticism of Trump during the primaries was that he was a showman without much substance or experience. This was pretty mild even in comparison to the overall mild criticism Trump faced from others outisde of Ted Cruz. Trump certainly probably enjoyed dominating a sitting governor and having him serve in a lackey role, but given his reliance on other primary candidates as surrogates like Ben Carson and prominant spokespeople like Guliani and Gingrinch, it seems more like he just viewed Christie as expenable and easily replaceable, not that he was trashing him.

If he intended to publicly cashier Christie, then it seemed more likely that he would release a public statement justifying the move by citing the recent convictions as causing doubt about Christie’s integrity, honesty, or character. After all, Trump himself said that Christie knew about the lane closures when Christie was still in the race. But the convictions seemed to have given Kushner, Bannon, or others the opening to get rid of Christie at an opportune moment.

Perhaps, I just saw a photograph of a few years back: Bill Clinton, Donald, Giuliani and Bloomberg playing golf, good friends: it’s a great healer.

Romney says the meeting went great.

Judging by the calibre of the people Trump has been gathering, far to his right and public menaces every one, I’m hoping for a bloodbath planned, such as luring them to a massive feast on the bed of a drained lake, and then called away, he personally releases the Seagates as did Dahut, laughing fiendishly; or the penthouse helicopter sequence in Godfather III.
Either way he and we can collude on its being terrorists to blame.

“Far-reaching” sounds somewhat unconventional.

Maybe it meant, there’s a chance he’ll become president.

That’s the way I see it, too: Trump will be enjoying today’s news-coverage tone of 'Trump deserves great credit for this attempt to reach out to the mainstream GOP,’ and at the very same time will have enjoyed his power to summon Romney and let Romney kiss the ring.

If he does offer Romney the job it will be in order to, some days later, gleefully pull the rug out and watch Romney’s public humiliation. Then Trump will offer the job to some clearly-unqualified person (his barber, perhaps, or Rudy Giuliani) to really rub it in Romney’s face.

His barber isn’t even qualified to cut hair.

I can’t help but think of this in terms of the latest South Park and the only cure for President Elect Garrison’s very localized dry skin, saliva.

Not going to happen.

I’m not sure what either Trump or Romney are up to with this but Romney at State isn’t realistic. Flynn and Bannon would be working overtime to undermine anything he tried to accomplish. I would expect Romney realizes that.

At this point he would be the best person in his cabinet.

Yes. Not a Romney fan, but it could have been much worse.

It will be the nightmare scenario, hyperhawk Bolton. I wish I could feel confident he wouldn’t get past Congressional review, but I’m not.

Good at draping, though.

Worst case between the two options of him and Obama? Sure.

Something to be hoped for given who Trump’s other picks might be? Sure.

Those are not hypocritical or contradictory in the slightest.

I think you’d be hard pressed to find a more moral businessman but I guess anyone with an R in front of his name is bad right?

Read post 5 and tell me this is someone concerned about jobs in the States.
