ronincyberpunk no more!

A few days ago I emailed TubaDiva requesting a change in my forum name from ronincyberpunk to Improv Geek. I originally registered on the boards while in high school and at that time I was using the ‘cool’ pseudonym of ronincyberpunk everywhere. I used it on AIM. I own the domain. I have emails. Etc. But now I’m 22 years old and I find myself sometimes embarassed to tell that name to people and so I’ve begun trying to move away from it.

Improv is a type of theatre, often comedy, that is driven mostly by suggestions by the audience which the actors use to create scenes on the spot. I’ve been a big fan of improv for almost nine years as I attended the local improv theatre and volunteered on and off. Earlier this year I began taking their classes, something I’ve been eager to do for all nine of those years.

This time has also been trying as my mom goes through her bone marrow transplant. I returned to Orlando to help with dad’s business and sort of hold down the fort while he and mom were in Houston. Most of my friends from my childhood have moved away and so I rebuilt my social life around Sak (the improv theatre).

Since I was already there so frequently, when I heard they were hiring a house manager to work all the nights of their shows (still only five nights a week) I decided to throw my hat into the ring. And to my surprise I got the job. Right now I’m still training, but my life has very quickly become heavily involved with improv and it’s something I do love. Also this semester of their improv classes, I’m in the level 2 class as well as helping out with the level 1.

Thus the name change. It fits me and it isn’t something I have to necessarily explain to others in the detail that ronincyberpunk required. I know it will take some getting used to, for myself and others. I’m not a major feature on the board but with the old name I think I tended to be recognized. So hopefully people will get used to this and life will move on without incident.

Huh. I liked ronincyberpunk much, much better. Oh well.

Congratulations!

From punk to geek. Definitely progress.

Well, Geeky, it’s your choice! It’s hard to keep up with name changes, although when it’s explained I do understand why people want to do it. But mah pore lil ole brain has a hard time keeping up. You seem like a fun, pleasant fellow, though – I’ll try to remember.

Also, prayers and good wishes for your mom and her marrow transplant!

Good. I always read your name wrong as some roincy bouncy something and it confused me.

You too? I always had to stop and read it slowly before it would click in my head that the name was ronincyberpunk.
Improv Geek, I would have liked to see you keep the the old name but add a few spaces. Oh well, if you like your new name better, that’s what counts. Congratulations on the change.
Goodbye rouncybouncypunk.
Hello, Improv Geek.

Me three, I thought maybe he was a friend of Pooh’s in the hundred acre forest.

Yeah!!

Ain’t puberty great!!!

Me three. There’s something about the combination that seems to make it inevitable.
You want to know something worse? No joke, but when I glance at it I read your new apellation as:
Improved Greek
I’m not sure it’s an improvement (sic), Bouncy.

Funny stuff guys. Yeah, the misreading of ‘ronincyberpunk’ was not uncommon. And you’re right, the new one has the misread at a glance capacity as well, but it’s less confusing. It usually just warrants a definition of ‘improv’ from those not in the know.

Now if we can just get spingears to follow suit.

I thought I was the only one…you should change your sig…I used to be ronincyberpunk, but most of you seem to have read it as rouncy bouncy…

(Isn’t it humiliating to pick something edgy and have everyone mistake you for Roo’s mom?)

Cal, the frightening thing is that I was about to post exactly the same thing.

I always read it as ro-NIN-see-BER-punk, so Improv Geek is an improvement.

and Mange Tout or is it Man Get Out?

I like it!

(I, too, was always stumbling over that other name in my head)

Good luck and best wishes to you and your mom while she recovers.

And good luck with the improv thing. I love improv and I’m in Orlando too so maybe I’ll see you sometime.

Whoa! I’d never even considered the second option. I just assumed it was mange tout. Now I’ve got to know which it is.
