Kudos to Kunilou for explaining why betting on your own sport or on your own team is illicit.
"Peter Edward Rose was placed on Baseball’s ineligible list in 1989 when Commissioner of Baseball A. Bartlett Giamatti concluded that Rose had bet on baseball games, including games involving his own team, the Cincinnati Reds.
In an agreement made with Baseball, Rose ACCEPTED HIS DE FACTO BANISHMENT from the sport. But Rose did not admit to having gambled on baseball games.
Nothing in this agreement shall be deemed either an admission or a denial by Peter Edward Rose of the allegation that he bet on any major-league baseball game."
from the Rose-Major League Baseball Agreement, 1989
OK, how about a compromise?
Can we allow Rose to enter the HOF and also allow his ceremonial appearances? We could let stand the restrictions on baseball employment?
I certainly think so.

This just in, 91% of Nazis believe that Hitler is a great man. Fortunately, being in the majority, they can do somethintg about it. They are also mad becuase the over one million Hitler fans feel that they are bing punished when Hitler is not called a great man.
No, Rose isn’t Hitler, but I hope this may explain why the majority doesn’t equal the truth or the right.
P.S. Let me ask the 91% a few historical and rule questions to see if they know enough to make any statement worth listening to at all. My bet is against is (and now I’m kicked out of the Straight Dope by Bud Selig!)

Oh, well. We can always make more killbots.
I think that the use of Hitler and Nazis in an analogy of Pete Rose and his fans is over the top.
Krispy Original - I survived the SDMB outage
Why? A majority supported each man. The point is that majorities do not equal truth. It seems more like “you feel,” as no evidence seems to be possible tha would make you think about the Rose issue, differently or otherwise. Where is your refutation of this being “over the top?” Where is the argument presented that a survey of non-experts means much as a means of determining truth? A political system may (strive to) be democratic, but reality isn’t.
Do you win because more people on Rose’s site say so?

Bucky,
The Hitler analogy is cheap because anyone with a weak argument can whip Adolph out to make an unfavorable comparison toward what they argue against.
For instance, in a debate or discussion about the presidential primaries, I could whip out the Hitler analogy by saying that Bush Jr. and his followers are like Hitler because George, like Adolph, claims to be a reformer.
You see? It’s just too easy to do. In reality, Hitler and the Nazis have no place in any rational discussion about baseball.
As to your stance on informed opinions, too bad. People are allowed to have opinions without regard to the level of knowledge on the subject. If you were meaning however to take a shot at my credentials as a fan, then forget it…that’s another dead end.
Perhaps you might venture an opinion on an issues that I’ve raised in this thread.
How does MLB (or anyone else) justify the sponsorship of the 2000 season of the Padres by a gambling establishment? How does Rose pose a threat to the game but this doesn’t?
Krispy Original - I survived the SDMB outage
Not to hijack, but…
Let us also not forget a certain Cal Ripken Jr., whose solid work ethic, devotion to the game, and lack of pretention helped remind everyone that there are still some greats left in baseball.
Sorry. As an O’s fan, I just have to take those little triumphs where I can find them…
[back to the topic]
Krispy? The difference between Rose and the Padres was explained very well by kunilou, earlier. MLB has nothing against gambling per se. It’s gambling upon your own sport- and, therefore, acting with something akin to inside information- that’s the big no-no.
And as for analogies, does the fact that you feel Rose should be reinstated because a vocal part of the population supports him mean that you feel that Clinton should have been exonerated by Congress because public opinion polls were on his side?
Rose knew the rules. Rose broke those rules. Rose accepted a lifetime ban. End of story.
In fact, I think what Rose is doing now is far more disgusting than the original charges. Rose is steadfastly claiming his innocence and marketing himself as a victim, knowing full well that Selig cannot say word one about it because of the terms of the ban. Rose is kicking MLB because he knows MLB can’t defend itself. Sounds like typical playground bully behavior to me.

Hey, they don’t call him Charlie Hustler for nothing.
The best lack all conviction
The worst are full of passionate intensity.

Surprise of all surprises! Darryl Strawberry tested positive for cocaine use. Again. Violating the rules of baseball. Again.
Now, when the time comes, will TPTB allow his name to be put on the ballot to enter the Hall of Fame?
Sure. There doesn’t seem to be a problem with forgiving New York City baseball players.

So Krispy, your argument boils down to,“But look at what Johnny is doing! Why are you picking on meeeee?”. You can’t justify little Petey’s behavior, so you are reduced to pointing fingers wildly in all directions.
How adult.
Pundit, as you well know, in the world of law different crimes are castigated with different punishments. I do not know exactly what MLB’s rule on drug abuse is, but I think it means that if you do it you get suspended for a few months while you go through rehabilitation.
MLB’s rule on betting on baseball games could not be more clear, however. YOU BET ON BASEBALL, YOU’RE BANNED FOR LIFE. that’s the story. Pete Rose knew the rule. He flouted it. He paid the price.
Out of sympathy for Rose, I would not be adverse to bending the rule and allowing him to become a member of the Hall of Fame if he admits his wrongdoing and apologizes. Let the guy sit and stew a few years and then if he comes out and does the right thing, give him a break, since baseball rules are not exactly Supreme Court Decisions. But Rose refuses to do the right thing and say I’m sorry, I bet on my team, I knew it was wrong, I shouldn’t have done it, now will you take me back like the Prodigal Son?
If he did that I’d be all in favor of taking him back into MLB and the Hall of Fame. Pete, son, you done repented and you seen the light and we welcomes you to ourn congregation.
Till he does that the SOB stays banned forever as far as I’m concerned.
