First off, sure, that was bad, but it was years and years ago! Maybe those people should have just taken a train, or a boat. Then, we killed 100K-200K of their Iraqi enemies, and not even a thank-you note! Rude!
At least I’ve helped you understand the comment. I feel that act alone warrants the Legion of Merit. And, no innocents were killed in the process.

As far as I can tell, the U.S. military hands out medals for looking both ways before crossing the street.
^^That’s true (or at least it was when I was in the Air Force in the '80s). I got two Air Force Achievement Medals (one with oak leaf cluster); one Air Force Commendation Medal and one Meritorious Service Medal and I was an office clerk. All for doing my job.
Same thing with the performance reports. They had all better be 10s or your career wouldn’t last long, especially for officers. And their report had better be signed somewhere by at least a one-star general. Note: I think they have five or so signatures that can be on there (your boss, his boss, his boss, etc.) The higher the rank of the biggest boss, the better. And if one of the three or four stars signed off? Looking good!
I used to have to bring up a dozen of those a day up to headquarters to be signed.
But first they had to typed on the actual form. So there would be a half-dozen drafts to make sure it was okay and fit into the space (roughly four to five typewritten lines) and then you typed it in. And heaven forbid you made a typo on it or used correction tape. If you mucked it up, you had to get signed all over again by everyone, and that made folks a wee bit upset.
To say you needed nerves of steel to type those endorsements would be an understatement.
I filled out an evaluation for a guy where I dared to list strengths and weaknesses. That was the last time anyone approached me about doing that.
Nobody ever accuses me of not thinking ahead…
