Route 666

Route 666 = Way of the Beast

Until a year or two ago there was a US Route 666, I think it was in Arizona, part of the legendary Route 66. The obscure path was removed from the registry partly because highway maintenance crews tired of replacing the signs that people joyously stole.

IIRC, it was very near 4 Corners.

It was a terrible movie with Lou Diamond Phillips

Well, it ran down the East side of the state, but it did not make it up to Four Corners. It started out at Sanders and wiggled South to Douglas. I cannot find any trace of it North of the current I-40.

A piece of it ran between Gallup, N.M, and Cortez, Colorado, but that has recently been rebranded as U.S. 491.

Which runs it within 20 miles of Four Corners. (The map I was looking at did not show it following I-40 into New Mexico and I did not think to look it up on the New Mexico page.)

Colorado portion.

New Mexico portion.

I drove it twice. Once home to Durango from Gallup. Once to Hovenweep National Monument from Durango.

It is creepy.
