Dogs, and suicide?

So, fellow Dopers, what’s your take on this? Is there some hidden doggy whistle drawing fido to his death, or do dogs actually have complex enough emotions to consider and execute a suicide plan? Why would dog after dog feel a desire to leap over the edge in order to get into the branches of a tree that it thought was close? Are dogs secretly enamored of trees (when they don’t have to pee) ?
