Roy Moore -- self-hating closeted gay man?

Heh, I almost wrote “thank God” after that. Trust your instincts!

What always pings my gay-o-meter, as it were, are politicians who fervently insist that homosexuality is a choice. Because it makes me think that they actively “choose” not to be gay every minute of their lives. And they assume everyone has these inclinations and faces these temptations. In their eyes, only weak-willed sinners give in to these impulses that they assume everyone has.

Now I’ve never really put RM in that group. Now the fundamental evangelicals are really weird about young girls, especially pretty ones, - they think they need a strong “headship” figure to keep them on the straight and narrow and they like to push young girls into relationships with older men before they are old enough to develop attractions to age appropriate guys.

Now, Michele Bachman is the one that really strikes me as a closet case. Her and her reparative therapist husband are like a sitcom version of the gay man and gay woman who marry out of a desperate desire to be heterosexual.

It’s not hating something, it’s the specific phrasings.

You never hear anybody say “we must fight the impulse to eat cauliflower!” or “we must fight the sin of baseball!” But a lot of the people who are obsessed with fighting this or that sexual practice/deviation/whatever have been caught with their pants down doing exactly the one thing that they specifically “need to fight” and other people do not as we don’t have the impulse.

Pretty stupid article. Utah has more men under the age of 25 than any other state (https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/distribution-by-age/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel={“colId”:“Location”,“sort”:“asc”}), so it’s not all that surprising that the level of porn there consumption is high. Huge confounder.

Another one for the file, but it still doesn’t seem like one of Moore’s sins.

Men under 25 are not religious in Utah? Men over 25 do not consume porn?

What about all the other states?

Add another one to the pile:

Just had a thought. They’re always going on about marriage being between a man and a woman.
Nothing was ever said to suggest that applies to adultery. Loophole!

The thing that usually sells the “closeted gay homophobe” stereotype is their ranting about “the homosexual lifestyle.”

In their minds, being gay is a choice - because they make a choice every day to be straight, even though they’d really, really like to sleep with a man if their religion and their political ideology didn’t expressly forbid it.

ETA: Looks like Ann beat me to it:

It’s all good, man.

That’s definitely a red flag for [male] closetry, especially (in my experience, anyway) when found in combination with one or more of the following:

Overdone machismo.

Overstated religious zealotry.

Being a drunk – not a drinker,mind you, or a heavy drinker,but a drunk.

Being a grown-up mama’s boy.

And yet one more example.

Anti-LGBT Conference Begins In Gayest Way Imaginable (If you want to skip ahead past the commentary click here which is 3 minutes in.)

Ok, that does not necessarily make that man gay but sure makes you go, “Hmmmmm…” :dubious:

Wow. I was expecting show tunes.

I’ve thought about that myself. To a lot of those in the identified demographic, perverted sex (meaning anything and everything other than male-on-postpubescent-female) is perverted sex is perverted sex, all of it lumped together and everyone is tempted by it and only fear of censure and punishment prevents us all from going for it – heck, they lumped it together expressly when they used to say accepting gay marriage would lead to incestuous or pedophile or bestial or inanimate-object marriage. It’s all the same to them so yeah, the more “bent” the more titillating.

But Moore? Looks to me he just can’t stand TeH Gayz AND he is into grabbing himself some teenie poon – and he manifestly sees no issue with this. He’s a putz in his own right on several different matters at once.

I thought it was breathtakingly beautiful. “Love keeps no record of wrong”. So much truth. So much truth.

And the commentary is just what I’m going to need tonight if I’m struggling to fall asleep.

It’s got to be hard being a comedian these days, when the right-wing is indistinguishable from a parody.

I mean, seriously, you can’t make up something funnier than opening a meeting for Anti-Gay Crusaders with a flag twirling interpretative dance set to a song with the lyric “love keeps no record of wrong.”
