Rubber stamping gurus! What is this thing?

My mom sent me an awesome gift: a selection of rubber stamping supplies. I don’t remember if I told her I was playing around with rubber stamps recently, or if she used some sort of eerie long-distance maternal radar, but it’s really the cat’s pyjamas.

Anyway, so I’ve got this tool thing. . . it’s a long, round wooden handle, and at each end is a metal rod with a round knob at the end. The knob at one is end slightly larger than the knob at the other end.
It doesn’t seem to “go” with anything else in the package. The package contained some stamps, two metallic-ink pads, a black ink pad, and a bottle each of gold and silver powder.

The only obvious thing I can think of doing with it is maybe to emboss a foil with it, or something–but there wasn’t any foil in the package.

I’ve Googled through a couple dozen stamping sites, and haven’t found anything like it. Any idea what this thing is and what it’s used for?

I’m not a stamper, but I’ll guess it’s some type of burnisher?

I think you’re right, Scarlett. I can find that term in rubber-stampy contexts for wet and dry embossing. I don’t know why I was I didn’t think of paper embossing . . . guess my mind was stuck on hot embossing. Wish I could find a picture of one to be sure.
