His Coronation notwithstanding, Rubio’s a dunce, which becomes more evident every time he opens his mouth. I can see the GOP propping him up through the primaries, just as they did Romney, in a cynical ploy to swing Hispanics they believe are just stupid enough to vote for any brown face.
The Republicans are convinced that all they need is a brown face on a ticket. This is also the reason for Nikki Haley’s and Bobby Jindal’s extended 15 minutes.
That’s probably part of the idea, but the Hispanics with TVs will see that Rubio is white, so it won’t get them very far. I think that most Latinos in the country don’t identify with white Hispanics, especially those whose family came with Cuban immigration privilege.
Maybe the Republicans think that all they need is to get someone with a name that ends with a vowel (or a Z, in some cases) who can speak some Spanish, and Latinos won’t notice that he has nothing particularly interesting or new to say. Or even that they might overlook it when someone like Ted Cruz, another Republican great white Hispanic hope, immediately starts shameless political grandstanding and hackery before he’s got even a month in the Senate.
The idea Randy Paul has any chance of the nomination, much less being elected, is absurd to the point of being nonsensical.
Randy is totally lacking one of his father’s strongest talents - the ability to be charming while spouting utter nonsense. I think he has come across as something of a bully in most of his appearances on news shows. His father has always used his sense of humor to avoid seeming too much of a scold. Randy has failed miserably at that from what I’ve seen.
Plus, if he runs there are bound to be plenty of reporters sniffing around in his past. I realize the average person won’t care too much about goofy college pranks but, the sort of things a nozey reporter could dig up won’t help Randy much with his religious base.
Is Huntsman actually a moderate? The threads around here indicate that he’s actually pretty extremely conservative, in line with what you’d expect from a Utah conservative. It’s the mere fact that saying “I trust scientist on the science issue” is so rare in a republican that he comes out looking like a moderate.
Even if he’s not really a moderate (and I also think he’s not), I wonder if the idea that he is is too entrenched for primary voters to take a second look.
Does Christie stand any chance seeing that he didn’t get invited to CPAC? Would Rubio be a better VP than he would POTUS? I mean, it seems like all the republicans are worried about now is capturing enough of the demographic to get to 270 and thats it.
Chris Christie is more interested in getting re-elected in New Jersey next year. The problem is that in order to do so, he’ll have to stake out positions that are completely unacceptable to the Republican base (see: Sandy relief, Medicaid expansion, etc.).
I used to think that the desire to win the White House after eight years of Obama would have been enough to get the Tea Party base to sign on to a Christie candidacy, but nothing I’ve seen over the last three or four years makes me think that they’ll do anything quite so sane.
I’m pretty sure the footage of Christie touring hurricane-damaged areas in New Jersey with Obama is going to kill him in the Republican primaries. Not to mention his recent criticism of the NRA and John Boehner.
We’ve ruled out Huntsman and Christie because they don’t match the party groupthink but then we can’t have Rubio because he’s a lightweight and Jeb has the poisonous Bush name attached to him. I honestly don’t see any republican congress leadership stepping up…
fearful voice
dont…no no no…don’t tell mewe gonna have…
Jeb will be at the top of the ticket (which I think is unlikely to happen), or not on it at all. Maybe his dad had to be veep in order to position himself to become prez, but it’s clear that BushClan thinks the vice-presidency is beneath them now.
So, you can stay and work at whatever job we have for you. Pay your taxes, play by the rules, fuck up and we drop kick you over the border. But you will never ever get to vote, because that would be wrong. And he will look you right in the eye and swear that the likelihood of you’re voting Dem has nothing whatever to do with it.
Shit. Maybe the best we can do, maybe all we can get. Better than breaking up families, better than sending kids who grew up American to fend for themselves in Mexico or Guatemala. Its not awful, its just not good. Perhaps it will bring Hispanic-Americans stampeding to support Republicans. Perhaps I am the Queen of Romania.
And he just signed the “conservatives for gay marriage” amicus brief to SCOTUS. Being on that list will make it impossible to win a nation-wide GOP primary until 2020, IMO. I truly hope I’m wrong, but it would be staggering to me to see a GOP presidential candidate support gay marriage as soon as 2016.
blush Oh my. I’ve been called and must respond! Yeah, you’re about right. The only thing I would add is that Jeb has proven that he does not work well with legislative bodies. Fortunately, if elected POTUS that won’t be an issue…
My favorite story about him is the “no acronyms allowed in government”* order. Then a reporter asks him where he got the name JEB from. The look on his face was truely priceless.
He wasn’t really wrong in this. Government does use too many insider terms and acronyms. It’s just that he was SO emphatic and absolute with it. A lesson all politicians should learn.
I really like Huntsman. I remember when he was governor of Utah. And he said, “gays are people, too”. Although this wasn’t a big revelation for most of the US, it was HUGE in Mormonlandia. And it got them to thinking, which is a good thing.
