Rude 2026 Election Night Party Thread

Maybe not a Pit thread, but …

Also, my take on the subject is: the “DEPLOY THE PARACHUTES!!!” crowd may very well BE the reason why the election seems to have gone off smoothly.

To ‘perfect’ my analogy, maybe the parachutes are WHY we didn’t smack into the Earth at terminal velocity

Yes, like the way the 2000 computer crisis was averted by giant efforts to prevent it. Democracy requires work and maybe people put the effort in.

Here it it is.
. And here is a 9-minute analysis of who is who and how dire the situation. Honestly I can see the rant being repeated in about two years only with ketchip.

Thanks!

Since I last posted on that subject, I went back to YT and re-watched the Downfall bunker clip with the actual subtitles. And the non-meme version echoes trump more than ever-- the ranting insults against the Generals, who he blames for his own mistakes, claiming he alone is the genius who was singularly responsible for taking over Europe, despite the failings, lies and backstabbing of the Generals and the men under them. The paranoia, the complete lack of self-reflection, the willingness to both construct a lie and then come to completely believe one’s own lie. It’s all there.

AFAIK, Bruno Ganz’ whole dialog throughout the movie were authentic, attested quotes by Hitler. Not in the exact same timeline, that’s a freedom the writers and director for a historical movie should have, but all were things he actually said in the bunker. Including the rant.

In addition to those three (I agree with you on all counts, btw), there was a proposal in Kitsap County, where I live, to allow the public utility commission to study the feasibility of taking over supplying electricity. The current supplier, for-profit Puget Sound Energy owned mostly by private equity, successfully fooled enough voters with a massive, deceptive ad campaign using the money we overpaid them.

Bring back Puget Power!

(Sorry, that’s the utility I grew up with in Bremerton.)

I’ve seen one idiot, and there are certainly more, demanding a January 6 Part 2 to stop the seating of the new Congress.

Wouldn’t surprise me one bit!

But it sure won’t stop the new Congress being seated.

Especially if they try it on Jan 6 again.

I did see one posting that said ‘it’s not a blue wave, it’s not a blue tsunami, it’s a blu-kkake,’ and I LOL’d pretty hard. I wouldn’t amplify that out in the wild, but I will share it here.

Pretty sure @Jack Batty would be egregiously responsible for that!!!
Finger wag!!!
(good one - not bad)

I saw one headline that referred to Tuesday as ”an extinction-level event” for the Republican Party. I assumed it was from some overly-gleeful gloating left wing pundit. Nope. Ron deSantis.

I’d happily take credit if Jon Favreau hadn’t said it on Pod Save America an hour earlier.

Yeah, because he has been so middle-of-the-road in his own state, when he had the power to affect things. He’s a hypocrite who is only trying to qualify himself for the nomination in 2028.

I’m rewatching Downfall now. These lines from the Goebbels character resonate (he had ordered unarmed civilians to sacrifice themselves to Russian attacks):

I don’t pity them. The people called this upon themselves. We didn’t force the people. They gave us a mandate, and now they’re paying for it.

“Nothing Ever Happens” memers up big.

More serious thought about why we didn’t have widespread efforts of voter fraud…

Someone pointed out to me recently that even though Trump and his cohorts lie all of the time, including about the contents of court cases, their actual legal fillings generally don’t contain outright falsehoods.

This is why the courts so easily dismissed all of the 2020 voter fraud cases. The filings didn’t present any outright false information or faked evidence, even when Trump went on TV and insisted that this or that court case was about to drop this or that evidence (which we knew was fabricated). All their court cases were based on was testimony by MAGA idiots who genuinely thought they saw one thing or another, but the things they saw were very easily explainable - because they had nothing to do with fraud.

Basically, where our system is good at holding them accountable - court filings where a judge that’s pissed off you’re wasting his time is going to find you in contempt and put you in jail for a few days or charge you a fine - the Trumpers behave. Where our system is bad at holding them accountable - blabbing falsehoods on mass media, for example - they very much don’t.

Same goes with Jan 6 - it’s a situation where Congress was responsible for holding Trump accountable, and so the Republicans just chose not to.

US elections are actually very solidly built. They’re controlled by the fifty states, not the federal government. They’d be incredibly hard to rig. And the consequences would be at least in part up to state courts.

Meanwhile, Republican legislators in various states proposing using lame-duck sessions to legislate to straitjacket the incoming Dem administrations and/or majorities. Already senior outgoing leaders in at least two: GA(governor) and IA(Speaker), saying “no”.
