The anti-Muslim bigotry in Michigan (and directed at Michigan) is still going strong.
“You forgot 9/11” - No you bigoted piece of shit. I just haven’t spent the last 25 years masturbating about it, quite unlike your perpetual victimhood and recreational grief.
“Here comes the hijabs and Sharia law”. Oh yes, it says right in the Constitution that when Muslims in the US reach 2% of the population and 1% of the Senate that they get to rule everyone else and demand that they conform to their customs.
“Democrats started this by eliminating the McCarran-Walter Act which barred Muslims from holding public office.” The law did no such thing. End of story.
“Look at the hellhole that Dearborn is.” If your definition of hellhole is that it has a lot of people that are different than you, I suppose for you it would be. For decent open-minded folks, it is not.
I’m glad that on Tuesday the better angels of our nation turned out and voted. I hope that this is the first nail in the MAGA coffin and that this tsunami will break the cult. It won’t finally be over for probably 80 years until the last MAGA shithead lies stinking in the earth.
Ditto. It was based in part by Traudl Junge’s memoirs. She was Hitler’s last private secretary and in the bunker. In the clip she’s the one in the light green sweater who comforts the crying secretary in the passage outside.
I enjoyed and laughed at the clip that was posted but I have never turned my nose up at the film. With that said, I haven’t ever watched it but in my defense I only watch a few films a year. I see that it is easy to find streaming so I will add it to my list for the next time I do watch a movie.
I gotta say, once I saw the film, the memes became a lot less funny. It’s no longer “Look how funny an angry Hitler is” but is “I remember what a grindingly brutal scene this was”.
In the context of “repeating predictions incessantly for a long time before something happens that can be seized upon as fulfilling the prediction”, maybe so!
No, I fucking haven’t. I haven’t forgotten for a second how absolutely shitty people were to Muslims for no fucking reason at all. Witnessing that bigotry in the aftermath of the collective horror of 9/11 made the whole experience even worse. Ever since then, it’s like watching a slow-motion train wreck.
Do they have any fucking idea how good the food is? Maybe that will turn them around.
I’ve lived in other states and their food sucked. I had no idea how good we had it and we have it that good because of immigrants.
Interesting turn re: the film Downfall and reactions to the meme clip I posted. I agree with Tamerlane’s take-- I don’t think that the memes made from that particular clip take away from, or make light of, the movie or the actual events that the movie is about at all.
The clip is just such a perfect vehicle to parody a man who has Godwinized himself. Here’s a man who clearly has deep emotional insecurities alongside malignant narcissism and delusions of granduer, who claws his way to power despite being massively unqualified to lead, and surrounds himself with lickspittle lackeys willing to sell their souls to do anything he tells them to do, no matter how wrong. Then, when he experiences blowback from his terrible decisions, he rants and raves while his terrified subordinates try to break bad news in a way that will not make them the sacrificial messenger. Who did I just describe?
And, I don’t think that to parody a bad thing is to make light of it in a way that is dismissing the badness of it. I think we’ve often used parody to highlight and criticize the badness of that thing in sometimes the only way we have to do so. Humor can be an effective weapon when the power balance is asymmetrical.
I haven’t seen the whole movie, but I have seen that particular clip with the actual subtitles, and it is indeed a very gripping, well acted, moving scene. that’s clear from the tone and body language of the actors alone, even not knowing the actual dialogue. I had meant to seek out the movie and watch it when that meme was popular in trump’s first term, but never got around to it, and then the meme faded out. Until now. I’ll make a point to watch Downfall, maybe tonight-- I see it’s ‘free with ads on Plex’.
This almost deserves a new thread (here, in the Pit), but, tl;dr, where are all the efforts at massive voter suppression? The death of our democracy? Yes I know about the purging of voter rolls and such, and if the Dems overcame that, then, awesome.
But all summer and fall all I heard was talk about large groups of ICE vote supressors blocking access to polling places all across the land. Trump trying to decertify elections, with the Supreme Court backing him up. Some reddit posts about glitched if not hacked voting machines, the specter of millions of votes being canceled or flipped. Martial law being declared in the election’s wake. A possible civil war, bloodbaths in the streets as dft’s goon militias finally made their move, assault rifles at the ready…
Come Wednesday, and all of that has vanished like farts in the wind. The Supremes actually stood up against dft’s lame attempts, no martial law declared. If there were attempts at voter intimidation they quickly and quietly got quashed by local officials who properly did their jobs. If voting machines were hacked they had a minimal effect on the outcome. No homies trying to start a 2nd civil war.
You’d almost think that these stories and notions were the efforts of a small but concerted band of “concerned” citizens (and we have had more than a few here) constantly crying about the sky falling down, speading fear, uncertainty, and doubt wherever they could.
Maaaybe our democracy will indeed die one day. But it wasn’t this day.
Administration officials would not not say that federal agents would be deployed. With the history of Jan. 6, straight up fake electors, the ninja recount, the efforts to breach ballot box security and everything else that these psychos have done, I say that none of the above mentioned fears were irrational.
I’ve been thinking about that, too. And I’ve never been happier to be wrong. I think the D gains in this election may be ephemeral, as the economy still sucks, and i don’t know if Congress can do much to stop Trump’s worst excesses, like the war in Iran. But … This election cements the right to vote in the US. And I’m really glad about that.
