Ruhe in Frieden, Karlheinz Stockhausen

Doesn’t seem to have gotten to English wikis yet: Dead at 79.
A great body of work.

Damn. A great loss.

I never got into his music, but his influence was undeniable.

RIP. I wish he’d been able to continue going completely bonkers for many more years.

RIP, but he’d have eventually gone around the clock of his bonkersness and ended up producing the daringly atonal Girls Aloud 25th anniversary comeback album (at the age of 99)

Eta: from space.

Wow. Stockhausen changed the way I think about music. The way I think about sounds.

Put me down for an advance copy

A long time Stockhausen fan here; I was about to start this thread myself having just heard the news on (of all places) Paul Harvey.

Whether you liked his music or not, or whether you even called it music, Stockhausen was one of the most creative minds of our time.

Some seem to think it’s mindless sound, devoid of emotion. But there are some parts in Hymnen, specifically the Russian anthem at the end of the second region which truly speak to some of the deeper regions of my heart. And further along, the Spanish anthem in the third region is a complete outpouring of joy.

Who else but Stockhausen would envision a string quartet with each player in a separate flying helicopter with the sounds of the rotors becoming part of the music?

Even now, I suspect he is playing a vibration in the rhythm of the universe .

Rest in piece, KS.

I’m listening to Kontakte right now.

Gee, last year Ligeti, now KS. All I have to say is, hang on Boulez!

Here’s the obit from the Guardian:

I would suggest a moment of silence for ol’ Karlheinz, but then John Cage’s people might sue us. :frowning:

Geez, first 9/11 and now this!
(the real Stockhausen fans out there know what I’m talking about).

You leave works of art out of this.
