Rules of month to month tennancy in California

Obviously this is hypothetical, because I live in Canada.

So - if a person was living somewhere in California (LA, for instance), and they had not signed a lease and had no formal contract, what sort of notice would they be legally required to give their landlord.

For the sake of arguement, lets say that the person in question was renting a room in the home of the landlord, as opposed to a separate residence.

Even an appropriate link would be swell.

Ah, very good.

Thanks for that.

Be aware, however, that rent control laws can prevent termination of even a month-to-month tenancy except for cause. Summary of the SF rules on the subject here (with link to actual ordinance and regs). And, yes, note that this includes a roommate in a single family household.
