Rum, rum, rum, rum, rummity rummm!

I prefer Mount Gay straight out of the bottle. No breathing, no ice, no nada. It’s smooth enough to make looking like a street person worth it.

I just bought a bottle of that the other day. Is it really so bad? If it gets the job done I s’pose the means don’t matter much, but is it so foul only a hardened sea salt can stomach?

Some folks I know speak with awe-filled reverence about Jack Iron rum. That’s not necessarily a compliment. Apparently, it’s 160 proof and if you put ice cubes in it, they sink. Follow it immediately with a glass of water, or suffer the consequences.

I don’t know if it’s available in this country. Heck, I don’t know if it’s legal in this country.

You misunderstand…if you open a bottle of the Sailor, the other bottles will moulder in the back of your liquor cabinet, only occasionally used for cooking. It’s that good.

Admiral Nelson’s is a good substitute for Captain Morgan’s, and is much cheaper to boot.

I would suggest Pampero, from Venezuala. My scotch drinkin’ friend loves it on the rocks. And at $16, a bit cheaper than Pyrat.

Here! Here!

That’s what I use for mixing. I prefer Appleton Estate Extra (aged 12 years) for sipping.

But good gods does Appleton have an annoying website.

I’d think that the taste of the barrel is too strong to mix well with anything. What do you use?

Get some frozen pina colada and strawberry daiquiri concentrate, dump em together in a blender and add a Half bottle of Rum.

Pina Colonicas.

Can someone give me a hot buttered rum recipe to ease my aching throat? I have lemon, honey, rum, sugar and butter.

My wife’s Aunt brought me back a bottle of Havana Club Anejo Reserva from Cuba. I’m a whiskey drinker (yes, I included the “e” on purpose; Irish and bourbon being my choices) and my experience with rum has always been as a mixer, but hot damn if this isn’t tasty! I’ve been sipping it straight up and it’s really good. I don’t know if it’s available outside of Cuba or not, but if you see it, try it.

Mix appropriate quantities of Swiss Miss, Strawberry Nesquik, a Jar of Schmuckers Hot Fudge, Peppermint Schnapps, Rum, and Hotmilk. Stir until well blended and the fudge is melted. Serve it hot in a tall glass with a scoop of peppermint chocolate chip ice cream. Sort of a reverse rumshake.

My favourite… it’s been sold in Canada for years - much better than Bacardi Gold.

ps - apparently Google ads thinks that rum is pretty gay!

Juice of 1/2 lime, ice. Lime wedge. Key lime is best.

Spiced rum? Might as well take Everclear, dilute 50-50 with tap water and throw those silly-assed mulling spices Aunt Bertha gave you two Christmases ago into the mix.

Dreadlocks Mary

For the Mix, blend together:

1 large 46 oz. can of Tomato Juice (or Clamato)
3 tablespoons of chopped culantro or cilantro
1 Scotch Bonnet pepper
1 clove of mashed garlic
Some Pickapeppa sauce

Mix with your choice of rum (151 would do.).
Serve over ice with a lime garnish.

The mojito is a classic–'bout to try my first one in a few minutes (Tommy Bahama White Sands light rum…mmmm!). If you want to shake up the rum-and-coke thing, try a Cubalibre: light rum and Coke with a splash of lime juice and a lime garnish. Rum also apparently goes well with hibiscus, so try it in hot hibiscus tea or cold jamaica for something a little more unusual. (I don’t know if you can get jamaica in Florida, but it’s a pretty popular drink in Mexican neighborhoods here–I think it’s just hibiscus tea on ice, anyway.) Texas Tea is a real winner for a heavy drinker: one part each rum, tequila, vodka, gin, bourbon, triple sec and sweet/sour mix; stir; then (if you like) add Coke and stir again. It’ll get your buddy fucked up.

Over a thousand rum recipes. You might want to narrow it down by spiced, white, dark, black, gold or overproof.

Overproof rum is quite legal. Back in my dorm days I was known to down shots of Bacardi 151 (for 151 proof) with my buddies. It has a fire-retardant screen under the cap so your kitchen doesn’t spontaneously explode if someone breathes on it.

BTW, I’m also anxious to hear a good hot buttered rum recipe. I used to love buttered-rum-flavored candy as a kid, but I’ve never had the real deal.

Feel free to add some worcestershire sauce if you’d like…

Also, if you wanted to make a complete signature drink, you could grind some kosher salt and allspice berries (pimento) together. Use the allspice salt to coat the rim.

Update on the Sailor Jerry’s: Fantastic stuff!

Years ago, I used to drink Whaler’s Original Dark. I haven’t seen it in stores forever, only it’s stunted and sad frou-frou offspring. I see it’s available online - I think I will buy a bottle and see if it is as good as I remember.

Definitely a sipping rum, not a mixing rum. At least, I was never tempted to mix it.
